I have just bought this rifle and am struggling to find any decent source of info on them on the net(maybe my google foo is weak) as I would love to know more about it and possibly find a bayonet and scope for it as I know both were made
Try the book the Black Rifle. The first volume has info on them. Hang around, there's a few owned by some of the guys too...yes, bayonets and scopes were made for them.
It appears to me, that your AR-10 was manufactured in Holland by Artillerie-Inrichtingen during the 1956-1959 period, some 1200 rifles were produced. Both the Portuguese Army and Sidem had secured orders.

The earliest ones to come to Oz were "surplus" from, allegedly, Sudan. These were the early LIGHT model with the one-piece hand-guard and the externally-fluted barrel. Cool as Hell, and not bad to shoot standard NATO ball. Every one that I saw had been "butchered" at some time by having the gas-tube cut by the simple expedient of dropping a saw through the one-piece, round-ish hand- guard and through the gas tube. Whoever "restored" them replaced the tube but did a very dodgy job of repairing the hand-guards. The fluted barrels were kinda cute. ALL had the "rock 'n' roll" bits , including the "hook" on the hammer, removed.
Then the "Portuguese" models showed up. Heavier, but with all the fruit. Very pleasant to shoot and quite accurate with Oz ball ammo. A few have survived the "gun purges" here in Oz.
Machinery WAY ahead of its time. The fiasco of the SR-25 simply shows up the fact that Eugene Stoner got it pretty much right nearly forty years earlier.

Always, it looks like somewhere along the way the brown fibrite furniture was painted green like the early AR15/M16 was. I had a rifle show up like that and black over top of the green. Not knowing what I now do, I commenced to removing the enamel coating...it must have been because nothing I had, chemical wise would touch it. It was just plain stubborn. I wonder if this was done by user or factory...Quote:

I won't be touching the paint(or whatever it is) as even if added by a user and not the factory its still part of the rifles history to me. Trying to find a bayonet for it that doesn't cost half as much as the rifle did is the next task.

I guess you'd have to keep watch closely...daily.
I had one of the Sudanese models with the semi-auto Sendra receiver in the early 1990's. The bore condition wasn't great. We range tested it with a new HK91 a friend had at the time and it was not only more accurate but much more comfortable to shoot.
That's only the second time I've heard that suggested. Last time I mentioned that I was shouted down as a heretic. I always felt these shot like they were on the far edge of the time pressure curve and were about to come apart...then I shot the M14 and FN C1... Personal opinion only, others mileage may vary...Quote:

As previously posted quite a few made it down here to OZ, converted to Semi by grinding the auto sear hook off the hammer, removing the auto sear and pin, and welding up part of the selector barrel so it wouldn't spin around to the auto position. They also XXXX out the 'AUTO' marking on the lower receiver. Seems most where also painted black and I've only ever seen one in the original brown. As a dealer I've had hands on a few out here over the years, mainly the Sudanese versions but the odd Portuguese one as well. A few years back I knew of a few still in service with Chopper shooters up in the NT, but I reckon they would have had to have worn them out by now. In my experience they are not bad to shoot but I wouldn't sell a L1A1 to buy one given the choice.
Having grown up with Lee Enfields and graduated to L1A1s, the AR-10 was a revelation.
Really handy and a hoot in the bush; you just had to be a bit careful with the aluminium magazines. Did not miss the "rock 'n' roll feature at all. Not much fun (or point) on an L1A1, even less on something as light as an AR-10, especially the "Sudanese" version; "straight-line" layout or not.
