VZ 24 info needed.

I do not want to commit blasphemy here, as this is a Milsurp site, and every long gun I own is in original military configuration. However, my Son-in-Law , knowing my affinity for Mausers, decided to give me a "Fathers Day" present.
He doesn't have a lot of firearms knowledge, although Uncle Sam trusts him enough to be an "Apache Driver". Based at Ft. Campbell. Deployed TWICE in Afghanistan and Iraq.
He proudly brought me a pro built VZ 24 action, re-barreled in .308. Timney trigger, which has a scary light trigger pull. Drilled and tapped. HEAVY Adams & Bennett 18 inch barrel, and an uninstalled low scope safety.
I know, because I took it to my local gunsmith, who checked it out, then wanted to buy it!
Bolt lugs and bolt face lapped. Headspace dead on.
I no longer hunt, so this will be a "Safe Queen". The stock alone, much less the time/effort spent to finish it will be more than I wanted to do, yet, I do not want to disappoint him.
I was just curious as to the origin of the original receiver.
Serial # is UR 10418 stamped ZBROJOVKA BRNO A.S. VZ..24
Haven't pulled the scope mounts off to see if there is any stamps under them. Can't find my Star bits.

Romanian contract after the Germans moved into Czech. Rifle built 1939/40. Well made and a real keeper.

Any Father's Day gift that is a firearm is awesome no matter what condition. I'd love to see it complete someday so keep us all posted. Should make a great shooter.

I bet if you put that in a good free floated stock it'll be a tack driver. Those are great triggers, and adjustable. Looks like it may have been drilled and tapped for a peep sight at one time, a smith could probably get you some screws to cover the holes.

Too bad you don't hunt any more, that one would carry great. Head down to Walmart and buy some star bits, you can always use them...

Pulled the front scope mount off and the receiver is a smooth as a baby's butt. If it's been ground , someone did a fantastic job. Same finish as the rest of the rifle, and an excellent job of counter boring the mount holes.

I did not mean to sound ungrateful for the gift. I I would just have preferred a "pristine" 98K LOL!!

I have been looking around at stocks, and have found a few semi inletted. I'll put a nice one on it.

Question...do the aftermarket stocks have any type of re-enforcement where the military recoil lug is located? None mention it, or is it really needed? As I stated, all of mine are military, and I have never done a build before.

Probably not necessary in a civilian stock. They aren't shot as much as military rifles are, or beat up and banged around as much.

Yes a recoil lug is needed , that is how the action is bedded in the military 98 . That is what the square block on the bottom of the action is for . The two pillars that the action screws go through just space the magazine housing . It is needed for even one shot . That is why many Mil 98's put into cheap stock lose their accuracy . There needs to be something very solid there .

Civilian stocks use actual bedding, not recoil lugs which is why they don't exist in civilian stocks.

Explain just what that " bedding " is ? That is what the recoil block is .

Well, a 700 Remington stock has a high front end and then the recoil lug is bedded into the stock. The rest is just the receiver sitting in the stock. I had a 700 BDL deluxe and there was no bedding except for that. Others too. The bedding compound is a special addition.

A bedding block is different from a through bolt on a military rifle. Through bolts are not used on civilian stocks.

Yes, that was what I was assuming he was asking since it is a former military rifle that had one. I haven't seen them on any civilian stocks, not saying they don't make them but interior bedding is all I've ever seen.
