On my Rock Island I have a stock i'm trying to ID. At some point i thought i read that the number IDed it as a NM stock but now i can't find that info to save my life.

It has a lot of repairs done to it (none well:move eek:) so worth is no longer an issue.
The number is a drawing number version number 4. These were late WWII replacement part stock for the M1903, M1903A3 and A4 rifles.

D-35526 is an early "scant " stock part number.
"-4" is a modification of the original design .
John Beard would tell you it was as a result of Remington
requesting a wider cut out for the tail of the
receiver.

Is the stock in question machine cut( not gnawed out) for 1903A3 receiver ring?

My A4 with a late war replacement scant stock has similar wood filler repairs. That's how it was when received from CMP, along with a vertical pencil line on one side. That shows how desperate they were to keep up with demand for wood.

Here is a NOS stock that I got years ago, has been factory inletted for the 1903A1 only
and the 1903A3 will not fit nor has the handguard ring been cut

I'd say the OP is a pre and early-war Springfield stock. Can't say that I saw any wartime stocks with drawing numbers on them. Keystone, AB&B, MB and Embossing Co had the drawing numbers on the boxes but none on the stock "that I recall seeing". Got pics of the cutoff notch and front ring area? I expect there is an "S" in the cutoff.
i have a scant grip stock with the same drawing number.
it is cut for a 1903A3 handguard ring, {by the factory}
and is not a NM stock, only a replacement stock.
No Scant stocks were ever made as National Match stocks - Some were used for later M1903A4s.
