I was told some winchesters were made as D's... Wether or not someone was blowing smoke up my arse is anyones guess...
M1C rifles were built using new Springfield receivers.
M1D rifles were built using used receivers. So, they can be Springfield, Winchester, IHC or even HRA receivers.
I have a WRA D
all WRA except barrel
from the CMP lottery
Same here. I got a Winchester D from the CMP auction, springfield barrel of course.
Strange world we live in. The current CMP auction WRA-D with no accessories is over 4 grand, yet this mint CMP WRA-D got no bids at $3200 and it's complete. Go figure.

I have a friend, an older retired Col., who has a Lottery CMP D that in a Winchester. He has kept in in the wrap as an investment. I should point out I've never seen the gun but I have no reason to doubt him.
I received a Winchester M1D from the CMP in 1997. At that time someone wrote an article about the numbers. As I recall, about 10% of the M1D's released from the CMP at that time were Winchester. I think there were reports of only a few HRA's, IHC's and post war Springfields. The rest were all WWII Springfields.
Here is a picture.

For some reason, I have the idea that the M1Ds were made before IHC and HRA rifles were produced.
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Ed, then you must believe that all the Tooele 1960s marked M1D rifles are rebuilds rather than original assembled M1D rifles, right?
M1D rifles were built in the fifties and sixties as sniper rifles for Guard units (go figure!!) and many were put in storage. Hence the M1D lottery rifles we know from DCM/CMP sales.
Other rifles were assembled from parts, which could be ordered through supply in the fifties, so many different builds may confuse issue for collectors. Units sometimes built their own if an armorer had the parts. More confusion.
NO M1D rifles were issued to snipers in WWII, as they came along too late for war effort.
Many rifles were other than Springfield and you will see them from time to time. Since the rifle's construction requires no machining of receiver, many have been built in the aftermarket world, and they are just as valid an M1D if constructed with real parts. Experts will advise you if your rifle is a real one or a parts rifle.
I also recieved a Winchester M1D in the 1st lottery. Splg barrel.
