Is $300.00 way out of line to pay for the book The Bren Gun Saga 1999 updated version ?
It depends on how much you want the book and if you can find it cheaper elsewhere. If you can't find it cheaper elsewhere and you really want the book, you are going to have to pay $300, I'm afraid.
I’ve seen for over $600 on Amazon... soooooo.... seems cheap now!

The last Bren Gun Saga that sold on E-Bay a couple of weeks ago was the 1986 first edition , and sold for $200.00. The one I was told to purchase was the 1999 second revised edition that has about 100 more pages and corrections made to the first book . That is the one I bought today . I was holding off waiting for Peter Laidler's book to come out , but it seems that will not be .
Sometimes it best to wait for the last few seconds of an auction on eBay, then pounce!
Well........ if you want the book to look good on your book shelf then here's a better idea. Borrow your friends and copy the cover. Then put that cover onto a similarly sized book and slip THAT book onto your book shelf. Problem solved and cheap too. If you want the book for its information, then personally, I'd say that it was $290 over priced. Just my view of course
Seen two for sale here in the UK this summer...... for .......£200 each, both sold with little hesitation!!
I was the only bidder on the 1999 edition . the 1986 edition that sold earlier had 12 bidders ,and it was in lesser condition with a damaged dust cover and sold for $200.00 . The book originally sold for under $70.00 when it was still in print .I just purchased my Bren MkII in April of this year . It's like a fine wine it gets better as time goes on .
Come a little bit closer........ I don't want everyone to learn this so I'll talk in a whisper..... You could just look on Ebay and find a little officially published booklet titled A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BREN LIGHT MACHINE GUN. Either the very post war 1948 version or the 1969 version that details the L4 variants or the last 12/83 version - they're all pretty much the same with ongoing additions. Then get hold of the USER HANDBOOK FOR THE .303" BREN GUN AND 7.62mm BREN L4A1 TO L4A7 or the '84 booklet that includes the A8 and 9's. With that alone you have pretty much got 2//3rds of the book. Then get a couple of the parts lists and the little Skennerton SAIS book and that's pretty much it. I'm just saying that if you want to learn about the Bren these books will tell you what the others do.
Don't forget the Infantry Training Pams. Mk.1, Mk.2 and L4. I've got them available until my supply is exhausted.

I must confess to unwittingly purchasing a car related manual that was being offered at a bargain price, some years ago, at a show. It was only when I got it home that I realised why it was being sold cheap..........it was written in French!
recently paid $250 for a book ive been trying to get for ages, was £40 when it came out !
Thing is though...they don't go down in price and a good hard cover book is always a good addition. I know Peter doesn't like the Bren Gun Saga, but the pics are excellent. Sometimes you even see pics of guys you know in there...like the Sten book...Quote:

Currently $772.52Cdn on Amazon. $399.00US on AbeBooks. The thing is out of print, so if you want it you have to sell an organ and pay what's asked.
Dang, those are crazy prices! And the author makes zip in secondary sales. They should just electronic publish, but I guess that has it shortcomings as well?
Think I will try collecting the pubs Peter Laidler suggested.
I picked mine up for under $100 CDN at a Calgary Gun show and didn't hesitate. You have to look around.
The author, Dougalby, is dead and so no new updates can be expected from that source. There will be no new reprints either as the publisher, R. Blake Stevens, died this year. Strike while the iron is hot.
