Hi Guys,
I was at a gun show today and one of the sellers had a No1 MK3 .22 cal rifle.
The rifle is a mixmaster of numbers. That said, it looked like any other #1.
The stock #J 63010, the nose piece # 77238 and the others like wise didn't match.
The wood and the bore looks in good shape
I don't know if the calibre out weighs some of the mixed numbers. He is asking $600.
Could it be worth that much ???

Was the seller selling the rifle as an original No.2 MKIV or just a No.1 MKIII converted to .22LR? The quick way to tell if maybe original is to look for the proof testing on the barrel. In the states, there was plenty of .22LR parts available to convert a No.1 MKIII to .22LR as I have done it myself. If you buy a No.1 MKIII for $300.00 and invest in a .22LR barrel liner, barrel reamer, cartridge adapter for the chamber and a new .22LR Bolt head. It would run you about $600.00 or so.

Page Two of the story..............
I went back to the local gun show today and bought the .22 cal British rifle.
It is a #2 MK 4. The stock has " II M4 near the butt disk, 22 on the magazine, receiver and bolt have the same serial number F 1468.
On the right side of the socket there is a crown,GR,1917,SWT22 and IV. Left side N, broad arrow, Z...Crown,GR and an "X with an F in the bottom.
OK guys what is it? Pix tomorrow when there is some good light.

Sounds like a New Zealand one.
If the butt socket is just marked with the Royal cypher & the date, 1917, but no manufacturer's mark, then it may well be a National Rifle Factory/Standard Small Arms produced Peddled Scheme rifle. If that is the case, if you look to the LHS of the bolt way at the rear of the body it should be marked either NRF or SSA. On the other hand, the butt socket may have had the original markings partly linished off at the time of conversion from 303 to 22, although I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's a SSA, or less likely, a NRF.
On the the left side of the socket it does have an NZ with a broad arrow between the letters

I looked closely at the muzzle and cannot see where a liner might have been installed. It appears that it was an original boring of .22 caliber.
It does shoot nice and I like the eject feature of ejecting the empties in the mag well.
SWT, could be SHT?

Crown, X (pennants?) and F (P?) on the left side (Receiver?) is the proof mark.
If it's a Peddled Scheme rifle the manufacturer's mark won't be on the butt socket, it'll be on the very back of the receiver just to the left of the hole where the bolt fits in, & 'round the corner' from the safety catch! I'd love to know if you can see SSA or NRF there......

I just checked the receiver at the location you inquired about and I found an "A.P." and a crown, 19 and some other mark not descernable. If I am not looking in the right area let me know and I"ll dig further.

Hello Gil. It may be that the rifle was linished up with the loss of some markings when it was converted to .22. It's clearly a nice desirable item regardless. I really like the .22 trainers as you've all the history & charisma of the full house version, with the ability to shoot it where space or noise constraints apply. It's also a cheap shooter as well, comparing the cost of .303 ammo to .22!

The difference in ammo dollars is quite a bit.
I have a lot of .22 cal but not much .303
Not much recoil either. LOL
Must be a SSA if the markings that remain are Crown GR 1917 if it was another factory the name would remain as that would be between the GR & 1917
Yes, because of the relative positions of the cypher, manufacturer, designation & date. I was just meaning that it's possible the SSA that you'd expect to be at rear left might have got lost at some point, like if someone with a linisher got near it when it was converted. It would be unusual I know, but like you, I'd lay odds it's a Peddled Scheme rifle.
