A question of perception?

Morning all, I have always used a variety of military or civilian targets with all my Rifles and can shoot in a reasonably constant manner, sort of got used to my limitations over the years...

Well, the last time I was at the range, I got chatting to a guy who made up his own 100yd targets ( white squares with a single black 2 Inch bull),he swore they really tightened his groups.

I was sceptical, until I used one of his targets ... all my groups immediately tightened up, on a variety of my Rifles!

So, what I thought were the Rifles limitations, were my limitations!

Interesting....

No, no perception. Some shapes and dimensions of target just better fit different types of sights.
I have similar issues with my rifles.
Some I shoot great on big 16 inch targets with 6’clock hold, others just seem to work better on smaller targets with a bullseye hold. And viceversa.
I think it depends on the type of sights, on your eyes and on....who knows?
But it does make a difference!

sage words Ed, what this really shows is quite apart from the correctly applied principles of marksmanship, good eye sight and serviceable firearms, there are other forces at play here.

How an individuals brain "reads" the information supplied and turns this into a constant aiming point, clearly has a marked effect.

Well I have no qualms about my rifles ability, my ability at reloading the only thing that is the limiting factor is eyesight I am at the small end of 60+ I find the MKIII set up requires more concentration to detail than the No.4 set up.
You can fuzz the black to focus on your sights but when your shooting against a yellowy type of sand butt trap at yellow Fig.11's at 500M fuzzing the target does not work.
My last comp shoot I won but it was hard yaka in 42 Celcius (I used a No.4) 300-200-100yds multi position timed strings my mind was willing but the eyes played up a bit I have not shot my 303's since my own choice in the matter but hope to get back into it in the cooler months. Us older codgers just have to one day I guess accept our eyes are not as good as they were when we were 21 y/o

I hear its "turned out nice again" most days this summer Ron! It must be a nightmare, I had 46c for 7 days straight in Greece a few years ago, that's just not funny....

No thanks, no more please...

White squares with a single black 2 inch bull would tend to draw one's eye towards it. However, the target itself doesn't improve accuracy. It's you being forced to concentrate more by the apparent smaller target.

At least the coolant is not too pricey John, When I was in Brazil many years ago I have to admit I was way over the Chief Medical Officers guidelines of 24 units (back then it was 24 units IIRC) that was nearly every day, my Nephew collected all my empty's, weighed them in and bought a watch.......

You got that right Geoff, only 2 c here tonight, but still trying out the coolant! My better half say's it had an effect on my vertical hold...she might be right mate!

I think BD6 you need to get hold of a Darwin Stubby probably reduce the units to @ 4.

While we are on the subject of beer, I put paid to rather unhealthy amount of Butcombe Ales 5% Goram last night, I recommend it to any UK beer drinkers, if you are lucky enough to get it in your area.
