Took the new carbine to the range today love shooting it, however I noticed I was hitting to the right or completely missing altogether. While loading the magazine I noticed the rear sight (type II) had started to drift off the dovetail. Am I correct that these are supposed to be peened and how do I correct this? Thanks in advance for any advice.
It's just slid on the dovetail and staked. Adjust the aperture all the way to one side and you should be able to see a stake mark - try adjusting all the way the other direction if you don't.
Funny anecdote; I once got a good deal on an 03A3 because the guy "couldn't hit anything with the f'ing thing." Yup. Loose rear sight :lol:
thanks for the info, do I take a punch and mallet and peen the edge of the dove tail?
There’ll be a mark underneath the adjustable portion of the rear sight (if that makes sense). If it were mine, I’d take a small punch and give it a good whack right where the original stake mark was.Quote:

I just use the Thread locker. Has worked fine, not much heat there from shooting.
The rear sight has to be installed from the right to left.
Sight Removed from the left to the right.
The left side dovetails narrow in to wedge the sight on.
Early flip sights have a S on them...... meaning push the S towards the left/Smaller edge.
Do not remove or install from the left side........... :nono:

Your loose sight reminds me of shooting with my son once. He stepped up hitting tight groups, his last round was what we figured was a flyer.
Big Daddy here steps up and prints a nice horizontal line walking left almost off the paper. I wound her back to the left with my last shot a dead ringer. He takes over..... pretty much a repeat of his first try. When I took over, again walking off to the left..... This time I realized my sight was loose. The targets he still has pinned up in his rec room and seems to have forgot about the rest of the story.

Thank you all for the advise and help I decided to go with the loc-tite, see how that works.
painter 777 went to the range with a friend once with an M1 Garand. Shot a couple of clips sat down to take a turn and found I was having trouble finding the front sight in the peep. sat there for 5 minutes rubbing my eyes blinking, to no avail. Finally my friend notices that the front sight is not on the gas cylinder found it under the table 2 minutes later.
I would be very careful about "whacking" anything on or near that receiver slot. The receiver is hardened steel and it will crack given the right hit. Use force carefully, pay attention to what Charlie said about left/right.
Yes, agreed. It’s all relative I suppose. A good whack while blacksmithing is certainly different than a good whack in this application. I certainly didn’t mean to advise making any horseshoes! HahaQuote:

I use a brass drift punch placed on the bottom side of the dovetail on the sight. I have used blue loctite, rather than whacking the receiver, and it never moved after that. Often on M1 Carbines, you find that the rear sight will be a little left of center in the receiver sight bridge.
Peening the edge of the dovetail of the sight base is legitimate. First get it moderately tight to where you can shoot it. Now center the aperture and shoot. Adjust the sight by drifting the whole thing until you get lined up. Mark it. Now take it out, peen the edges some more and wedge that sucker in there on the marks. Having a sight pusher for the carbine is terrific for this but you can surely rig up something using your vise and some pieces of wood. At this point you may find you need to make very minor adjustments to the windage but you'll basically be on-line.
I just acquired my first M1 that happens to have a loose rear site. The info on this thread is very helpful to this noobie. Hats off to the contributors.
