I have one of these and it is really quite light and well balanced. Presumably made post WW1, and uses what looks like a Long Lee bolt c/w Bolt mounted safety. The chamber is pretty rough (410 shells do not chamber or extract easily at all) and I'd like any advice on how best to clean it up without professional gear /tools etc etc.
I did something like the attached picture (random internet find) to clean a burr out of a Mosin Nagant chamber once. Back when they were $99 each :ugh:.
Anyway, worked a treat and takes off very little metal depending on grit.

Chamber length may be for 2 inch shells, not 2 1/2 or 3 inch.
It s definitely chambered for 2 1/2" shells - they do go in, though not easily and come out (though the same). Great suggestion on the dowel and Sandpaper. I'll start with 1000 or 600 grit to be on the safe side (more of a polish initially). Will report back.
Not strictly a "Garden Gun", they are smaller bore: ie Number 3 Garden Gun 9mm, number 1 Garden Gun .22 flobert.
Your .410 shotgun was made for 2 1/2" cartridge and available plain with Enfield bolt or de-lux with sliding safety.
This gun was also made as a "medium game" rifle in .32/40 cal.
Really? I like the idea of a 9mm version - was it 9mm luger?
Believe the 9mm is a rimfire and still loaded in Italy/
The 9mm was a shotgun specific rimfire cartridge quite common 100 years ago for 'garden' use in Europe, ie birds for the pot or exterminating rats and snakes. Cartridges made in USA too.
If you really look you may still find .22LR shot cartridges.
.22lr shot cartridges, that really sounds like a pointless invention!

Trying to get my head around these tiny shot shells, 9mm etc.
When you consider that even the most potent game loaded 12 bore cartridges today have a "realistic" effective range of 50 'ish' yds, what was the range of a 9mm shot shell?
I think back in the day I would rather have used something along the lines of the relatively powerful (for the day) Lincoln Jeffreys .22 air rifle for Garden Anti rat use etc.
Saying that, they were post WW1 I think..
I used to have 9mm rimfire garden gun, not much use to be honest, bought a box of 50 and sold the gun with about 1/2 the shells left. It was an off ticket gun that an old guy wanted rid of so after talking to Police HQ they were happy for it to go on ticket and registered. Had to add about 1” to the Butt as it was just under the legal overall length.
Also had .22 shot shells at one time, the spread was terrible and if you were shooting more than 5 feet you would hit nothing.
Quick update on this - I cleaned the chamber as suggested and everything is now fabulous EXCEPT the extractor is very very worn and doesn't always grasp the rim of the shell. Does anyone have any idea of the extractor used on these? Was it the standard Long Lee bolt head and catch??

Not a standard LE extractor. But one could be modified to fit I am sure.
I think that's a defect of the .410 case, where the rim is often poorly shaped.
The .22 shot shells are for pest control. I go mouse and squirrel hunting inside the barn. Doesn't make holes in the corrugated steel roof. And yes, short range only, but it does the job. An old single shot Cooey is perfect, but they will feed through a tube magazine too.

For bigger critters, I have the 410. Carrying cartridges in No.7-1/2 shot, No.6 shot and slugs.
Great little gun and weighs nothing.

Key no doubt, is a sharp extractor with a good spring. With that and a clean smooth chamber, it should hook just about anything out.

You do not have a location ie country listed so here is a guess. If your in the US then the 410 round is different. the British 410 round is it's own thing not a US round. You need to find a British 410 round.

The 3" cartridge seems to be more common in America; the 2 1/2" one is more common here (and some guns chambered for the 2" - good luck finding those)
In the US we have the 2 1/2" shotshell and the 3" shotshell. Also had a major US dealer was selling the British Enfield shotgun rounds for a long period. Someone that shares my Gun show tables bought several 100 rounds and has been selling them. I think I bought over 100 and an original ammo box for them. Also most of the stories that I've heard is they were issued to the India prison guards as a single shot shotgun. Just what I've heard.

I wish I could get my hands on some of that musket ammo here in Canada.
I read an article in an Indian newspaper dated 2010 about prison guards wanting to replace their muskets with modern firearms. Since the ammo showed up at US retailers a couple years later, I would guess that they were finally replaced and the existing ammo stock sold off.
Not trying to derail the thread but, years ago they made smooth bore versions of .22 rifles specifically to shoot the .22 shot shells. No, they do not work very well in the rifled barrels but, in the smooth bores they worked much better. Even the Remington Model 572 pump action .22 is available in a smooth bore.
