Swedish M41B

I went out on a limb this weekend and bid on a Swedish M41B at an online estate auction. The auction pics were few and not that great and the description very spare, but I bid accordingly.

Description advised that it is a "Mauser Carl Gustafs 1899 Sniper Rifle".

I'll post better pics and description when I get it, but anyone have any thoughts based on the auction pictures?

thus far it looks really good. certainly one of the best milsurp vintage sniper rifles. The AJACK scope is real deal as well as that mount. Staked correctly. Those are some of the best scopes re: glass quality. Correct font for the mount and base from what I can see. the Scope is a 1941 year (~2000 made in `41, 2000 made in `42). The scope turret looks properly proofed. Not sure about the stock but it appears not to have been sanded. Should be the cartouches behind the trigger guard. Small parts will probably be mismatched as they usually are but it could be correct. Bolt is blued which is correct for the B version. Stock disc will uncover the bore quality, but based on the stock, it could be really nice. Sling is incorrect for this rifle but it's better than nothing. BTW: buying an M41/b is never going out on a limb unless its a fake and this one appears to be the real deal. nice grab

There is always some uncertainty when buying something online, but so far this one seems to be checking out. I'll definitely post better pics when it arrives.

The M41B arrived at my FFL today. I got a chance to grab a few pictures before it went into the safe for the 10 day "cooling off" period.

It looks legit...

Bolt is blued and matching (body). The bolt sleeve, cocking piece and safety match each other, but not the bolt body.

There is an M55 adjustable rear sight mounted

Base and scope mount serial number match (19530) and appear to be correct for the receiver date (1899)

Stock apprear to be beech replacement (common for these rifles, I'm told) and has a single crown cartouche behind the trigger guard.

To avoid possible misinterpretation, it is not a decorative or protective surface "bluing" but a result of the hardening treatment of the steel (high nickel content ???). My S&L target rifle has the same bolt coloring, as does the trigger on my LP08 (a.k.a. Artillery Luger).

I could swear one of the swedish armorers once said they used a dulite black oxide for the bluing process to protect against rust on the steel. I think I can find the thread somewhere but I remember the high nickel content will leave the steel a plum color.

Those were the PRIVI 140g BTHP's as I recall and they didn't hold a candle to the SMK's but were half the cost. Lesson learned? Buy the good stuff. The rifle is still zeroed for 350M so this is my - 5" hold. My M96 is about the same but without all the fuss. At 900M it's close to 15' + and what ever the wind is blowing for windage. Some times it's 11'+ R or L. I sure miss the rages we used to have as everything is is cut to 100M and 200M on match days.

I'm not an expert at anything, there are good days and worse days and the days in the zone on the blue moon. But you cut your troubles in half or better with the 6.5 Swedish round. My good friend in the UK will cut 8 to 10 centers in matches at 1000M with the 139g SENECA and RL22. It's documented in the UK NRA. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to meet so many great and generous people.

Before I bought the M41B, I sent one of my M96's off to a trusted gunsmith to make up a faux 41B for the CMP Vintage Sniper Match. Recently got it back complete and he did a great job.

I've got a Weaver K4 scope on it and it fires handloads that I made up for my Ljungmans fairly well.
