Interesting picture. Must be target practice. I recall that some Marine's used canvas .30 cal. belts as slings for carbines like the lefty in the pic. Although this one has M2 ball, I thought that the use was for carbine ammo.
Testing/checking rifles before going out on patrol.

Looks like # 3 Carbine from left has been altered in Pic. Way lighter in color. Sling looks like a machine gun ammo belt. I'm suspicious big time!!

I found the photo is of the 77th Infantry Division on Le Shima in the Pacific in WWII. The division worked with the US Marines in many of their campaigns and was often referred by the Marines as the 77th Marine Division.
Tough little island, that. Isn't that where the Japanese commander resorted to feeding the organs of captured pilots to troops and officers to "increase fighting spirit."
