Neighbors arm each other vs Looters in Fla

In the aftermath of the hurricane near Panama city suburbs,
Neighbors Arm each other to fight off Looters.

In this story a guy named Carl Kuhn pulled 2 neighbors from the wreckage of their home.
Contacts other neighbors and loans guns to those without arms.
Looters appear, police are called and tell the callers they are on there own, that police are stretched to thin. To scare off approaching looters Carl Kuhn fires 2 warning shots in the ground.... scaring off looters. Later Carl Kuhn is arrested for 'Discharging a firearm in a residential area'. 4 days in jail until a bondsman can be found.
Court date Nov 26........... That will be 4 days after Thanksgiving.... :dunno:

I've also read a couple stories about hotel/motels that were looted. Looters were taking peoples money, food and clothes....... to include some having the clothes on their backs robbed.

So the cops couldn't be bothered to show up when the call went out for help with looters but they show when the guy pops off a couple? Somebody needs some training on priorities and a dose of commonsense for good measure.

Welcome to what a lot of folks have been complaining about after these storms. A few years ago a General said enough is enough and told his people to fire back. Some folks got the message real quick somehow and the good folks stopped being shot at. Some might say shoot looters on sight. Some folks stay with their stuff no matter the danger so they can protect their stuff. Which is also wrong but until common sense takes over. What can I say. When an area is hit common sense is needed. Not looting.

I'm sure the police were stretched thin. Looters had tried to steal police cars. Many looters hit the Pharmacy's first...... Wonder why?
Plus many of the police had been pulled back for their safety during the storm. They were averaging over 10 arrests per evening for awhile.
Once the power and phones were down......... you were on your own.

In all that wreckage I can't understand how they could call it a 'Residential Area' ??

And they wonder why people won't heed Mandatory Evacuations.

Old WWII Armourer told me "You put the first round through them immediately followed by one through the roof. When they the police question you as they will you say to them that you feared for your life so gave them a warning shot through the roof they had failed to obey your warning shot so you took them out."

I thought that the Fla. gun laws state that you can use deadly force if threatened with bodily harm or have minor children in you care.

The Stand your ground Law is interesting and has many problems. If you or your family are in fear and you pull out a gun and make the problem or away. Then you flashed a gun in public and go to jail. If you fire a warning shot then you go to jail, see above story. If you shoot and kill them, guess what? All is good. Of course your lawyer may have to work on that. Law has some major problems and people need to understand the law better, BOTH sides the person with the problem and the Legal folks. That said it is only for in fear of your life not your property. You can not legally shoot someone stealing your stuff. Which just happened in Lakeland, Fla.. One of the Lakeland Goverment folks shot someone stealing in a store and is now in jail, unless strings are pulled will be staying in jail for a while.
Please Think Twice about what you are going to do if something happens.

"Warning shots are not deadly force. " Yes but they can get you jail time. Shooting the person if you are in fear of your life may not get you jail time.

Also - Fun update the gov official that I posted about earlier in this thread must have known somebody as he is out of jail and at Home, under house arrest. The pics show that the person shot was going out the door with his back to the person that shot him. Interesting. Also he did send in his notice while he was in jail, now out of jail, see above.

For those of us that are not so special, it can go different. A good family friend, a lawyer defended a client who shot someone 7 times in the chest with a 45cal. They arrested him and he spent 1 YEAR and 11 MONTHS in Jail before trial. No they did not allow "Stand your Ground". Jury took less than an hour to find the shooter NOT Guilty and released him. There is a long story that goes with this but we should note, he Spent 1 Year 11 months in Jail before being found Not Guilty and released. What it cost him for my friends legal team fees I don't want to know. Short Story on this, BOTH sides had the chance to Walk Away as has happened in many of these Fla "Stand your Ground" cases. Sometimes it just might be better to walk away or let them steal something from you. Yes, you could be in the right to stand your ground. This person was found Not Guilty after going thru everything.
I'm going to go back to loading up another belt of 8mm now.

More importantly,,,,#2 Don't waive your 6th under any circumstance. They like to have people do that because the courts are so backed up. Defense lawyers even go along with it, they're all in cahoots don't kid yourself. Not my problem you're backed up, GIVE ME MY SPEEDY TRAIL.

The simple fact is that it's not law enforcement's job to protect anyone. This may upset some folks but that's the law. Some will do it if thrown into a situation as just happened in California but it ain't the norm. Their job is to clean up the mess after it's happened and it's too late. My Sheriff and his Lieutenant were out here at my shop many years ago and told me that if something bad happens, I'd best be able to tend to it myself. They would be happy to come and help clean up the mess afterwards.

What you're referring to is a more recent development. Much of it driven home during the last administration and total lack of respect for law enforcement as a whole. It's never been part of the police charter to protect or defend anyone. There are some police that will do so given the right circumstances but with the more current "fear of liability" as you stated, my guess is that those attitudes are getting much farther and fewer between. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but I think it's orchestrated right in with the very successful attempt to fundamentally change America which was touted by the last administration. In fact, we see the damage done over that time every day now and it's frightening to the point where one has to wonder if it can ever be turned around. I know many from other countries will read this as shocking. This is not Europe or the UK. What many fail to understand/fathom is the sheer size, diversity, (both good and bad), and population of the USA. That's why maintaining the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is so important. We can't afford to let those rights be destroyed. Chaos would ensue at some point. It's all happened before in other places around the world. It's really ignorant to think that it can never happen here.

Heard mention today about how many arms one could/should be able to own.

Yeah, it's the same old, tired playbook. Undermining the electoral system to cause folks to become disgruntled and change it is all part of the plan too. Enough said for the reasons you stated.

Personal responsibility for ones own welfare/ safety and actions is always to be preferred over delegating to others. This is the fundamental difference.

Guy in Panama City should have said he had an “accidental discharge” due to being “ frightened by the situation”...

On conversation about duty of law enforcement to protect. We saw the effects of law enforcement ( school resource officer) at Parkland High School not stepping up. That is obviously only one narrow example, but it is a startling example. Would a citizen have been hailed or jailed if they stepped up, and stepped into the fray with a firearm and done the job we expect law enforcement to perform?

We had a nutcase kill a woman and wound the doctor before the doctor pulled his own pistol and fired back at a local hospital. Of course it was against his employer's policies for anyone to be armed, he wasn't facing any legal problem because obviously it was a good shoot and not one of the People's Republic States that surround us that forbid CCW.
They were going to fire him but the public outcry saved his job, the man did what was necessary. BTW, he carried the pistol just because he was concerned about that specific patient. He knew if things went sideways it's hard to carry a Cop in your front pocket.
