i have a chance to pick up a mk1 no3 in a plastic stock. dose anyone know where I can get some decent wood for it? I would like to bring it back to life, the gun looks to be in very good condition. of course it is missing the hardware. the man says he has the brass butt plat though. any help will be apprecheated,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Do not think that you can simply 'bolt on' all the bits & pieces and have a functioning rifle. These rifles were 'hand built' and everyone is slightly different. No3 Mk1 furniture is a bit more available.
The No3 Mk1 is a Mauser derivative and previously known as the Pattern (Pat) 14 which is the predecessor to US M1917 rifle.
You can still get DP Indian stock sets from Liberty Tree in the USA I believe.
About $300 for everything you need - but - they have sold out of fore ends and handguards, the only wood they have available is the Butts.Quote:

there are a few guys who reproduce some of the wood, not many make the fore end, not easy to duplicate properly for the masses....
Before even thinking about restoring a sportered rifle; make sure the barrel has not been cut down and that it's matching numbers for bolt and receiver.
If you post a few pictures we'll identify it for you and help you with the info you need. Otherwise we're guessing.
I realise that the original question came from someone in the US but last time I tried to buy some woodwork and a bayonet from Liberty Tree collectors for shipping to the UK I was informed that I could have the bayonet but they weren't allowed to ship the woodwork as it was a "gun part" and was therefore prohibited.... Just to clarify our ITAR law here in the USA as it stands today, any parts shipments to countries we are allowed to deal with that is over $100 in wholesale value requires export licensing. Shipments under $100 wholesale that don't require export licensing still require lodging with Customs and Border Protection via the ACES system. This also applies to antique shipments which don't require export licensing. You must be a registered exporter in order to register with the ACES AES system and do this required lodging with Customs/Census in order to acquire an International Transaction Number, (ITN), prior to shipment. The only exception is Canada where we can ship up to $500 worth of parts without the licensing requirement. This doesn't include bolts, breech blocks, barrels or receivers which all require licensing. This is why many companies refuse to ship outside of the USA. Import permits are required in order to import parts valued at over $100 wholesale regardless.

Thanks Brian. I thought you were clear to go so long as the deal was less than 100 USD. Didn't realise that you still needed further permission/registration unless you're in Canada.
The export/import process to Canada is exactly the same but with a $500 cap instead of $100. Yet, we in the USA are only allowed up to $100 from Canada before licensing is required. We need the current administration to fix that too while they’re at it. If all goes well some of this commerce will actually find some common sense this year when all the regulatory work gets sent to the BIS, US Dept. Of Commerce from DDTC US Dept. Of State.
What happened to the machinery that was being used to make reproductions in the UK before the gentleman passed on a couple of years ago?
Rob, is that Colin Moon to whom you're referring? I think he pantograph copied at lot of the stuff, but what happened to his equipment & patterns I'm afraid I have no idea. I accessed him through Geoffrey Organ of EFD & unfortunately they are now both at that great shooting range in the sky.

fellows I really apprecheat all the help! but if I buy the wood and all the hardware I will have as much in the gun as I can buy a complete one for. I am just going to keep looking for a decent complete one. after all I still have a very nice no.5 and have had several no.4 I wish I had back, but that's another story,,,,,,,,,,,

The benefit of re-building a Bitsa is that you learn how the rifle works and is put together - and I found it a cheap price for an education you could not get anywhere else.
I sourced parts to 'build' my No1 Mk3 from the USA, Australia, Phillipines, England, New Zealand and Germany, it is a real 'bitsa' but IT IS MY BITSA
