I took my M1 out for spring cleaning and can't seem to get it right. I have followed the assembly guide and watched some videos, but I can't seem to pinpoint my problem. The gun seems to assembly ok, but I can't get the bolt to slide all the way back to load a clip. It stops with about an inch of the breach bolt exposed. Any suggestions on what' s wrong?
I'd really appreciate some help!
Pull the trigger guard and drop the stock off the action. Check to see if there is anything blocking the rearward motion of the bolt in the back of the receiver.
If nothing is visible and still is not coming fully rearward, pull the op rod spring and see if that frees up rearward travel. If it still won't travel sufficiently rearward, then remove the op rod and slide the bolt by hand to make sure it can travel fully rearward.
Thanks. I know it will slide all the way back before I assemble it, but I'll take your advice and see if works.
You have the follower arm in the wrong potition on the accelerator or bullet guide tab on top of accelerator instead of under. Rick B

After I thought about it more Ive seen the arm on the op rod catch not properly under the Bullet guide release tab. Rick B

I can remember when some guys in each squad could take the M1 apart and put it back together blindfolded, they even would have a race as to the best time !
Rick, thank you so much! You pinpointed the problem. Your picture really helped. The operating rod catch was pointing down and catching the operating rod when I tried to pull the bolt back. I played with the operating rod catch until it was level with the pin installed and everything worked!

I should also point out that in certain reserve and National Guard installations it was common practice to store the M1 rifle with the firing pins removed, on
the Model 1911A1 pistol the magazine catch was removed and on M1 carbines, the bolt was removed.
These actions were a result of gangsters looting and stealing weapons from armories during the 1920's and 1930's
