I'm working on a Rockola stock that someone weirdly sanded spots on. I took 180 to the areas to dress them down, then used some alcohol stains to blend coloration. Now the issue is that the rest of the stock has more sheen and appears waxy due to 76 years of buildup compared to the areas I worked. I hit the spots once with BLO but what about pure TUNG oil? Will that add some thickness/build up for waxiness?

Since you've already used BLO, I'd stay with it. Try just feathering/blending it on the Flat Finish looking spots. If you can build the sheen up enough to nearly equal the other Waxy looking area, then try buffing the complete stock down with #4-0000 steel wool and furniture polish. Keep the wool wet with polish or you'll be sanding. Finish up by buffing entire stock with dry towel.... hard buffing, like your trying to start a fire.
Tung Oil is pretty much a loose Varnish, but will work like described above. Look for a Tung with a Low Sheen or Satin finish.

How can I get it done without spending a month on it, because it's not mine? It's one that someone asked me to knock the goofy sanding off of to even out. I've never had any luck building up sheen with BLO nor RLO. For instance I just stripped a Winchester stock someone checkered and varnished super shiny and after about 8 coats of RLO the thing is totally flat and still ugly. The only places building up are where the varnish or poly wasn't completely removed around the nose.
This RMC stock is almost gummy to the touch due to so much aged oily buildup. It's hard to believe that can easily be mimicked without some waxy substance.
EDIT: the poor results I get with all RLO and BLO is applied by hand and frictioned in with my bare hand until heat is felt. It doesn't yield good results for me.
That line is what you see looking at the stock. It's shiny below with a hard break to mat finish. Can I go straight to some furniture polish?

Have you tried wiping the entire stock down with a Damp Mineral Spirits rag to see if it rids it of the Tacky feel?
If this works, I'd then wipe on some Lo-sheen Tung Oil on the dull area. After drying you could then buff down with a lemon oil polish.
If you use the polish first, you'll have problems getting the Oil of choice to adhere.
The problem with spot repairs using RLO/BLO are just what you've pointed out.
A stock that was originally dunked in a heated vat of RLO....
Then having who knows what put on it over the next 70+ years.
Just wiping RLO/BLO on in no way will yield same results as the dunking.

Thank you. Yes, the color took very well on the wood. Used your suggestion and wiped it with Min Spirits and it made a good bit of difference, blending the sheen or maybe removing sheen where it was grippy from build up. I was happy with that. Next will be the Lemon Oil app.

I do not envy you Charlie. Been there done that with the cancer I had. Damn cleanout hurt worse each time I had to do it. For awhile it was every 6 months and then once a year. I wish you the best there young old timer.
Pure Tung Oil doesn't add any thickness. It soaks into the wood and keeps everything else out. It does produce a sheen if you rub in enough coats. 5 coats over 5 days, 24 hours drying time between coats, rubbed in gives a nice sheen.
Neither BLO nor RLO ever give any kind of sheen. Both dry flat. RLO tends to not dry at all though. Neither of 'em add anything thickness wise either. Wax adds thickness, but you have to maintain a wax finish far more than BLO or RLO.
Bruce, internal infection. Walking around with tubes and bags. Under control now with massive doses of IV antibiotics plus oral. Darned if I can tell how I acquired it, but it hasn't been pleasant. Finally got the extra plumbing out today, but now we wait and see if it is under full control. You gotta know its bad when I don't feel like eating! Could only sleep a few hours at a time and only on right side. Had to kneel in front of computer to keep up on email. Couldn't even sit! Hope I'm recovering. Will be able to tell by tomorrow. Its hell getting old! Its not for sissies. Now where the heck are my meds????
Hello Gentlemen, for me BLO gives a great GI mat finish as it should but Sheen is achieved with Pure Tongue Oil. 20-30 coats hand rubbed 1 inch at a time until too hot to touch with at least 4 days drying time between coats. But that is only for my Showboats.
I have found that the best product to use for what you are wanting to do, for blending, is Tru-Oil by Birchwood Casey. Apply SMALL amount, rub in w/finger. Do a second coat, and when dry, will be a little shiny. Hit with a bit of steel or bronze wool, and it will give you back that sheen that only years of built up linseed oil will give. I have used this method numerous time for spot repairs, and it never has failed.
