Dunkirk sucked hands down.
Anyway what are the war movies set in ww1 or just set before ww2 that should be looked at? See lots of video clips of different modern made war movies set in ww1 and earlier, but never find information on movies.
Ken burns was supposed to have released a ww1 documentary with original color film and voice recordings but never saw it listed anywhere
I'm not sure that it is possible to have a "War Movie" set before the war has actually begun unless the movie continues into the beginning of hostilities, of-course.Quote:

Most of these are attempts to portray history fact and several were made by veterans. From there we begin getting into films with enough added fiction that I begin feeling uncomfortable recomending them such as Midway and Battle of the Bulge.

The film "Heroes of Telemark", had lots of fiction and a distorted story line. My aunt's boyfriend was one of the saboteurs and he wouldn't attend the film's premier because some of it was far from the truth. There is a French made film about the raid with the saboteurs playing themselves!
meant to say war movies set in world war 1, or before ww2. Remember seeing a few of "building up to war" or "pre war days of the wermacht"

"...lots of fiction and a distorted story..." Nearly all war movies are like that. Some are worse than others though. Anything adapted from a Stephen Ambrose novel is a classic example of historical fiction. He promulgated the nonsense that the U.S. won W.W. II and failed to mention any other Allied country. Guy was a plagiarist anyway.
"...movies set in W.W. I..." Lot of 'em were made during the 1930's. All Quiet of the Western Front is one. There were several remakes, but the 1930 version won an Oscar. The 1979 American version is a decent movie too.
Lawrence of Arabia is another. There are lots of 'em, both American and English made. Do a net search for "W.W. I movies".
Most of the big epic W.W. II movies are highly fictionalized. Made by Brit or American studios that ignore all the other Allied countries. The Longest Day was a good movie, but made no mention of the fact that Canadian Para Pathfinders were the first to land or that only Canadians took their D-Day objective and advanced the farthest into Normandy.
Passchendaele and The Devil's Brigade(A highly fictionalized story about the 1st SSF) are worth watching.
Sahara with Bogart is a good movie. Lotta fiction though. The Star is really the tank.
One of the best Brit war movies was 'The Cruel Sea'. In Which We Serve is another. A 1942 RN propaganda story about a destroyer. Pegasus Bridge is another. Have a look here. British WWII films based on true events - IMDb
There are a boat load of movies set in the Spanish Civil War(1936-1939) too. For Whom the Bell Tolls was one. Guernica is another.
looking for world war 1 movies last night gave me a lot of ww2 and Korean war movies for some reason.
don't forget the Canadians got the easiest spot to land on for D Day, americans got the worst of it as usual.

Unfortunately, Hollywood seems to think that there has to be something for the non-history buff too often. So we have to put up with it. I can not personally attest to most but if you are interested in reasonably accurate films of Vietnam "Hamburger Hill" gives a good picture of the typical life in an infantry platoon (I was a grunt then). While it is not history (although the May, 1969 battle for Hill 937 was real and we went back in 1970), it does a very good job showing that life in that time. Also "We were soldiers once" is a good and realistic portrait of 1965 in Vietnam. Sam Elliot had the character of that era of senior NCO's down pat.
"They shall not grow old "is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't seen it because it was only released in select theaters that were nowhere near me. I have no idea if it has been released on DVD yet but it is supposed to be made with all original colorized footage (most of it unseen according to them).if I remember correctly, I believe they even got professional lip readers to try and figure out what most of the soldiers in the footage were saying so it is supposed to be a talking film as well even though it uses original WW1 footage

Theirs is the Glory is very special, being more of a documentary reconstruction than a drama film, using as it did, veterans of the battle, both Airborne and civilian, including Maj Freddie Gough of 1st Airborne Recce :) and filmed in the very locations, only a year or so after the battle happened.
We have the pleasure of Brian Desmond Hurst the Directors Nephew Allen Smith attend our museum on many occasions. Hurst made such classics as The Malta Story starring Alec Guiness as the lone Spitfire pilot.
Allen has the complete detail on how Hurst wanted to reconstruct the Battle for Arnhem using ONLY men that had fought there the year before and using all of the damage and destruction around the town to feature in the film, which was still evident.
The only visual reconstruction was the bridge which he tells us was a painting in the background...........amazing.
A real classic.
One of my favorite WWII movies is "Kelly's Heroes" Totally fiction but has a lot of big names in it and is just plain entertaining.
Just watched Danger Close about Long Tan it was a reasonable film about the battle although they played down the part the APC's played in saving the day and the crossing of the flooded river with only a couple of inches to spare free board before they were swamped (Read it in my book I have " Long Tan and Beyond Alpha Company & RAR in Vietnam 1966-67 By Lieutenant Colonel Charles S Mollison")
Not sure on the hostilities portrayed in the command center back at the base have not read that yet and doubt if it would be included in the book.
Also the part the NZ gun batteries played in keeping the enemy under the hammer not as good as Once we were Soldiers but our film industry does not have the engine room that Hollywood has still worth while watching though.

Have to agree with Saving Private Ryan being a powerful film. It's kind of an anti-war movie but I have always liked "Too Late the Hero", probably mostly because it depicts the war in the Pacific which most films don't. A Bridge Too Far is good, and Guns of Navarone, while fiction, is a good watch. Wings is an old classic, and the first All Quiet on the Western Front is powerful. There are a couple of post-war movies, like "Berlin Express" which are filmed in Berlin and clearly depict the total devastation there.
WE WERE SOLDIERS has to encapsulate everything a soldier goes through, from the sharp end to families and what they suffer when men and women are on operations.......brilliant piece of work.
I can recommend films from the Russian Mosfilm studios from the 50s to the present day. Especially film's like Come and see. The father of a soldier etc. They have been making quality patriotic films since the war. The vast majority of them don't have subtitles. But I can live with that as I find the production that good. Just bung it on YouTube and sit back.
