Hi guys. I'm wondering if anyone may be able to identify the unit marking on my Ross butt? Or might it just be a rack number?

I believe it is a rack number, rather than a unit number.

I think 117 is a rack number. 451 is the serial number. 1916 is the issue (and probably mfgr too) year.
Unit marking is often found on the front side of the stock's pistol grip.
I also think the 117 is a rack number..........

It's clearly marked on the right side of the butt 16th Battalion C.E.F., which is The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary's).

First one is a pic of the bottom grip area.
Looks like a "Z" over "718". Also note the 1916 dated sling. Everything date matches. 1916 dated rifle, bayonet, sling:D .

11 is for Pattern 1911 year of introduction of the MkII bt.

I wonder what the significance of CEF 19 is then?
Here I thought it referred to the 19th Bn. of the CEF, Lincoln and Welland.
Turns out it is "CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 1919". Very late issue indeed.
You must be reading it incorrectly? Please post a picture. Remember what I am referring to is the CIRCULAR cartouche C.E.F over 14,15,16, NOT markings like C.E.F over numbers on the side of the butt. God love ya! Philip
I am referring to a CIRCULAR CARTOUCHE inside having C.E.F. over 14,15,16. Post pictures of this CEF over 19, please. It will be a new one to me I have been collecting Ross Rifles since 1961. God love ya, Philip

"451" is only part of the serial number......the serial number for this rifle is 451 over 1916, followed by "LE". There were heaps of Mk III's made and issued in 1916 using number "451" and "1916", but only one of them was part of the other 998 rifles in the "LE" series.Quote:
