FN Browning 1910/22 jamming on first round not ejecting properly

Hi Everyone,

Not been on here for a while as my shooting hobby has changed from Military rifles to Rare & Historic Hand Guns.

I'm in the UK and cartridge fed handguns are banned unless it has a long barrel and a metal rod sticking out the rear. We can have muzzle loaders but that's not really an interest of ours.

Banned pistols can be had if your are a section 5 dealer or UK shooters with a firearms certificate can apply to there local police force you can have either a section 7.1 Historic certificate where this is a collection of older dated pistols but you can't shoot them but can
keep at home, or what we have is a section 7.3 Historic collection which you can shoot but have to be stored at a secure range in my case Bisley.

I need advice if anyone can help. We have a FN Browning 1910/22 dated 1925 in .380acp lovely little pistol but it keeps jamming. Load rounds into the mag, load mag, cock the action to chamber a round & fire, the fired case get stuck in the ejection port and action tries to load another round. It has been into a gunsmith he has given up on it but he replaced the main over the barrel spring and extractor for new ones. I have tried 3 different mags and it does it with all 3.
Any ideas would be very helpful & this is not the only pistol we own.

Since these rely on the firing pin to eject the empty case, the extractor must hold it firmly enough for the firing pin (striker) to eject it when the slide comes back and in effect re-cocks the firing striker. I wonder if your extractor or spring are still at fault and could use replacement? I take it you're using factory ammo, it has enough snap to cycle? I don't think it's the mags, they feed. Is the chamber smooth?

Many thanks for the reply, the extractor and spring are new bought in the US and posted over to the gunsmith here for him to fit, I have the old parts. Yes tried 3 lots of factory ammo same result Geco, Winchester & Magtech. Yes the chamber is smooth.
As our pistols are in secure storage I cant just turn up and get the pistol it has to be on a range day.

Yes, that was my point, WHERE did the parts come from... OK then I wonder if the striker was replaced would it have the sufficient snap to push it out on ejection? The extractor holds the casing in place to guide it out when the firing pin part of the striker contacts it...if it's too short it might be timed wrong...? I know there's other guys here with these...hang on a minute...

These are blowback but if you take out the extractor, you'll find it doesn't clear the empty out. The extractor also clears out training ammo and live rounds from the chamber...so those that don't think it's needed...

What BAR says. I had a 7.65 m.1922 with a shortened firing pin, it mal ejected as you have described.

Replacement of the firing pin resulted in a properly functioning pistol.

Also had a Browning with dirty cosmoline grease in firing oin channel. This one merely required detail cleaning to solve the problem.

It's about the only thing left. It isn't the mags...or it wouldn't feed, not give ejection issue... New striker...(firing pin)?

Is the failure to eject only on the first round in the magazine or pretty much all of them? I am tending to favor that the striker is not hitting the fired case with enough force to make the empty clear the ejection port. Could be striker is too short? Slide not coming back far enough? If the ejection is a bit late is the slide bouncing the empty back in? Sometimes it take a good eye to see what is happening.

Every fired case gets stuck in the ejection port apart from the last one when the mag is empty. You say a good eye its been several months in a gunsmiths shop you would have thought they would have noticed something but they gave up on it.

Given the onerous storage requirements the OP mentioned, is there anyone left in England who didn't see service in the Crimea who got to tinker with live firearms long enough to learn how they work?

You say no malfunction on the last round? If you load the magazine with just one round it will fire and eject normally? As there were versions of the 1922 built both with and without a magazine safety or disconnect, can it be fired without a magazine? Does the malfunction only occur when there is a "second"round in the magazine? Since the gun is blowback operated, a case will often come out of the chamber without the extractor extracting it. The extractor does need to hold part of the rim so the striker/ejector has something to work against. What happens if you shoot it sideways, "gangsta" style so the ejection port faces down?

I will try to answer your questions if I can we have owned this pistol for several months but most of this time its been in the gunsmiths, so I have only fired or tried to fire it a couple of times.
The last time I tried it 2 rounds in the mag, it jammed on the first fired case so I removed the mag cleared the jammed case second round had chambered replaced the empty mag fired the round and the case ejected cleanly. Will not fire if mag removed.
We are controlled on the range so no gangster style shooting. :thdown:

"service in the Crimea" I saw service in the British RAF as a dog handler/policeman, so know how firearms work but we are only allowed to do minor repairs things like this type of malfunction have to be done by a gunsmith where they can test fire the gun when ever they need to. We only have limited range time. In this case the gunsmith is not a good one.

Just trying to get a better idea of where in the sequence of events the stoppage is occuring. This will not be an exact parallel since the Browning does not lock open on an empty but here is a video of a Taurus with a bad extractor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJYx98yQSUI

Firing the pistol imparted enough energy to the slide to lock back on the empty mag, but with the fired case still partially in the chamber. Had there been another round in the magazine the slide coming forward would stripped a round out and either pushed the fired cartridge back into the chamber with nose of the new round against it or wedged itself underneath, depending on angles.

In this case, ejection did not occur because extraction was incomplete.

The other common reason for a failure to eject is the slide has not come back far enough to hit the ejector. Assuming the ammo is not under powered is the recoil spring too stiff? Is there too much friction? Does having a round in the magazine make a difference? If it ejects with an empty, as you said it fails on every round except the last?

Mag sits too high in the gun? Possibly something is restricting or slowing the slide travel?

Another cause would be the ejector being too short. In the case of the Browning the striker doubles as the ejector. One might assume that if the striker is long enough to fire the pistol that it should be long enough to eject the cartridge. I do not know if that is true. One more thing you guy should investigate.

Last question, have you paid this guy? As some folks around these parts are wont to say here, "He's gonna have to lick that calf over again."

To reply to your last question first NO I did not pay the guy for any work he carried out as for the new spring & ejector yes paid for them.

Ok watched the video the fired cases in my pistol are being extracted from the chamber so that when the pistol jams the fired case opening is 90' to the ejection port as the slide moves forward, almost like the extractor is holding the case. Does that make sense.

If a round is in the mag then the previous fired case will jam as above, the last round in the mag when fired will eject fully.

Tried 3 different mags happens on all 3.

Striker being too short I will investigate as the pistol has been removed from the gunsmith I do not want them working on it again. I have a FN 1910 I will compare strikers as the 1910 cycles faultlessly.

Tried with the old & new recoil springs jams with either.

M1922 9mm Kurz mags have 7 holes, 7.65 magazines have 8 holes. Since the stovepipe occurs when there is a subsequent round in the magazine is it somehow impeding the slide and keeping it from going back fast enough or far enough/? Other question, is the live round loose under the fired case? If so then the possibility exist the magazine is releasing the second round too soon.

All 3 mags have 7 holes & have FN 9m/m stamped on them. The other questions I can't answer until I look closer at the slide movement at our next range day 9th Feb.

mags are not easy to find here for the older pistols so when they do come up for sale then we buy them.

I don't have mine yet so can't even look at it to see. No word from Cabela's, tried calling, didn't get a return call. Looks like I may have the holster before the pistol. That's due to come tomorrow. Got me curious to see how they work now.

Picture was taken before extractor was replaced with a new one.

A lot better than mine was as mine was a Nazi seizure with eagles on it. Don't know if it was assembled before they got it and then stamped it or if it was made under their supervision. People tend to say the guns made under their supervision might not work, mine had problems. The problems were probably more me that the gun as I was about 18 at the time and didn't know much about them. I had a model 35 Hi Power that also was Nazi stamped and in both cases lacked finish. I had it redone and it was flawless...shot it lots.

You could always just swap the strikers in these two for an hour and see if that's the problem.

On the advice of two forum members who suggested there maybe a fault with the striker (firing pin). I was made aware that the 1910/22 & the 1910 share the same striker assembly so swap them to see if the 1922 ejects. I did this and yes it works.

This is a picture of them side by side you can see the 1922 one is the shorter of the two no way was that going to work. It's a pity the gunsmith that worked on it never noticed.

It's probably more a case of lacking experience in the specific firearm.

I'm sure one of my friends suggested the source of the problem to me, and I didn't believe him based on the fact the the firing pin set off cartridges, and ejected properly when "dry firing".

FYI the MAB Model "D" also uses a 1910/1922 compatible firing pin.
