We've seen five or six here over the years. Had one once myself. Usually from the 1941 production.
Ok thanks!
What about Fazakerley?
There were a few Maltby rifles set up as T's, as Surpmil says. I've never seen a genuine example dated anything other than 1941, but in principle there could be a few 1942 dated examples out there somewhere. It was thought for many years that no Faz rifles were ever converted to T spec but it would seem that a very few were; again, early manufacture rifles. This is because when H&H took over conversion from RSAF Enfield they scoped up all rifles that had been put aside having passed the accuracy criteria for conversion (regardless of where made), but in order to make the conversion process as straightforward as possible, it was soon decided on only BSA made rifles being converted. Hence, the early UK conversions by H&H can in principle be effected on any UK make of rifle. In practice early conversions are usually either BSA or Maltby produced 1941 dated rifles, with a very very occasional Faz rifle. Hope this helps.
And of course some Savage rifles entered the stream at some point also.
Yes, I have one. Sounds like not many maltbys were converted either.
This is very much a 'guesstimate', but based on observation of many hundreds of 4T's & L42's over the years, I reckon (very approximately) 85%ish of all 4T's were built on Shirley rifles, with all of the others - Trials, Long Branch, Savage, Maltby & Faz rifles, making up the remainder.
This is excellent information thanks guys!
A well known dealer in the UK just recently sold a Maltby made 4T.
I've seen 2 1943 Maltby's No4 T. Both were blued rifle and went through H&H.
I'd love to see photo's of it rgg_7. I have a very elderly acquaintance in the North of England who has a 1944 Maltby 4T. It is very pretty & he's as pleased as punch with it, but it's as wrong as a nine bob note & I haven't got the heart to tell him. He's also got a 'special lightened experimental' No32 bracket on one of his scopes. It isn't, it's actually an early one of my reproductions that has changed hands a few times & been 'modified' before being wound into him as something it isn't. Again, I didn't tell him; he's well into his eighties & I just couldn't do it to him......
If it is a 1943 rifle I guess it could be right, but it'll be the latest one I've ever heard of.
Did the O rings ever get to you, by the way? I posted them weeks ago, but recently I've had some stuff take ridiculously long to get to North America.
Here are two survivors. Surprisingly there is another Maltby L42 currently for sale, obviously for big $$, but its marking are much better than mine.
You need one of these:
I feel pretty certain your Maltby has a forend from a No4 trials rifle on it. There are certain distinctive profiles there...
Mine was in the 11,800 range and yours looks to be in the 12,000(?). IIRC most of those we've seen here were in a similar range of serial number and had the MkI style forend in beech with the mag cut off relief, as mine did also.
That might fit with some or all of the remaining No.4 trials rifle furniture being used to set up those early No4(T)s, whether done at H&H or RSAF(E)
Sharp eye with the pictures provided. It does have a Trials forend. s/n 12280!
