This brand new, unique and limited edition hardback book by Gil Boyd and Frank Fletcher (both ex members of The Parachute Regiment) brings together the stories of the snipers who took part in the Falklands War in 1982.

The 2nd of April, 2020 will be the 38th Anniversary of the invasion of the Falkland Islands by the Argentine Military.

The views and stories are those told by the men themselves, from the various regiments that made up the Task Force. It covers the arduous and traumatic tasks they undertook 1000s of miles from home and in terrible conditions. It tells the story of these highly trained, band of men who carried the L42A1 rifle into battle.

It is also the story of that rifle and how it endured from its origin as the Lee Enfield No 4 (T).303 sniper rifle to the L42A1 7.62mm sniper rifle it became. We also tell the story of its eventual replacement the L96A1 rifle from Accuracy International Limited.

For each book sold a donation will be made to the South Atlantic Medal Association (SAMA) and the Airborne Assault Museum at IWM at Duxford in Cambridgeshire.

Each book is signed by both authors.

The book has 125 pages and is well illustrated with imagery throughout.

I have read this book now. It is an easy to read book, the kind of which you can pick up and put down without losing track. The beginning and end are more reference information about the L42 and L96, and as such, to more informed readers, more of a revision than enlightenment. However, the main section of the book, and the purpose of the book, consists of the personal accounts. These are the bits I read first, before finishing with the beginning and end. The personal accounts are an eye opener into how ill prepared the British Army were with regards to sniping, WW2 all over again. It also shows that real 'sniping' didn't occur in vast quantities during the conflict, but was more ad hoc, if at all.

The book also highlights the battle for South Georgia and the opening battle by NP8901 when the invasion occurred. These two actions perhaps standout as much for the lack of formal recognition for the participants as they do for the fierce fight put up by the defenders.

A good coffee table book and useful addition to any collection of sniper rifles or equipt. The fact it funds charities is a nice touch.

Thanks for that summary. It is as you say a charity book, and today Frank and I gave our first amount to SAMA on the first anniversary week of the battle for the Falkland Islands, with the ABF Museum recieving their initial sum by the end of the week.

Exactly as you said, the interesting feature throughout when I interviewed those who were trained snipers during the war, was that the commanders of each Regiment, didn't really know how to utilise such a fantastic and highly trained resource, on geographical ground that cried out for work by these highly trained individuals.

It also flagged up, the total lack the Gurkhas had for trained snipers, and who were being trianed by a seconded SAS Officer on the way down south on board ship. Their frustration is evident, when they were issued the L42A1 rifle but also given an L1A1 as well. You can only imagine the weight of equipment ammo, Platoon mortars/7.62 link etc plus personal equipment that needed to be carried on their backs.

The two interviews that presented the biggest challenge were indeed the Gurkha sniper and the Argentinian sniper on Mount Longdon.

Thanks for your kind words on the book, certainly a different experience for me, as my past book writing for the Airborne Assault Museum charity of which I am the Fund raising Trustee, has in the past been about BING The Parachuting Dog who saved hundreds of lives attached to the 13th Battalion, and Mertyl The Parachuting Chicken, who parachuted into battle inside the smock of its owner, Lt Pat Glover, both true stories and now sold out, raising a lot for the museum.

We have done a limited edition on this book. Hope those that want one have theirs on the way. ;)

I tried to order your book and was quoted by Frank for shipping to the USA, problem is that when I tried to checkout on the site , it doesn't accept anything other than a UK address (zipcode) Can I paypal you with the correct postage to the USA or is there another way to get this book? Things have changed in the last week due to serious issues with Paypal, so it is a direct payment into a bank account now.
If you go back on the simplesite and order again stating its going to the U.S Frank will tell you how much in addition. He is doing the posting at the moment.

They've done a second printing and I just received my copy today today. Because they don't take PayPal, I had to get someone in the UK to forward the funds to them on my behalf.

Yes sorry about that Gary. The museum had to drop PayPal as they assumed they were gun runners or something and held their funds for 90 days every time a payment was made, and as you couldn't speak to a human it became an absolute nightmare. Far easier straight into the museum account, but do appreciate those that are abroad have various glitches.

Paypal has been holding about $20,000 in my Clubs membership dues for more than 5 years.

Yes someone needs to get aboard Paypal, their practices have taken a nose dive. I have just been put right it was 180 days............the only winner with our megre amount was Paypal on interest as OUR money gains them interest. It was a lot to the charities!!
Hate to think what your amount makes them in interest alone.
In the end we had to send a copy of our birth certificates and one other document with our home address on it, and suddenly the money came forth.
All because the museum called the Paypal account the title of the book FALKLANDS WAR SNIPERS DOWN SOUTH, from that someone in their centre in India thought we sounded like gun runners and flagged the account.
Take legal advice would be our way forward. Yours doesn't sound right at all. One thing we learnt, you have to maintain the pressure as often as you can, and be a pain.;)

The Club executive members who set up the account are no longer involved and not cooperating so the money is probably lost.

Someone needs a class action lawsuit...

If anyone followed John Williams' Shadow Stats, true inflation in America is running from 7 to 15%. If PP is holding your funds, they are gaining wealth (interest) at your expense (loss of interest plus devaluation through inflation). Perhaps aa letter from an attorney?

There arae other platforms, Wise being among them, but I wasn't smart enough to effect a transfer.

A letter from the Museum (the charity) Lawyer just bounced off their thick response armour. We recieved nothing back on that, it was just a constant battle of emails swamping their site that resolved it, but only as we approached the 180 day release date.
Awful company for such things but OK for the run of the mill small buyer/dealer on small amounts.;)
