SHOOTINGS - NOVA SCOTIA

So sorry to hear the news this morning amongst the tragedies of COVID -19 comes
a gunman disguised as a police officer who went on a rampage across the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, shooting people in their homes and setting fires, leaving 16 people dead on Sunday, in the deadliest such attack in the country’s history.
Officials said the suspected shooter was also dead.
RIP to all our Canadian friends our thoughts are with the families and friends and also the Police in Canada at this very sad time. ;)

As if what's going on didn't suffice already.

Apparently this person was a dentist. He killed four people in a house and then he just went rogue. Very sad event. No reason given so far as to motives, intents etc. My families sympathies to all the affected families.

As Ovidio says if its not enough with Covid-19 and a woman Mountie 23 year veteran married 2 children sometimes open carry has its good side any public seeing a rogue can open up on them yes I know bullets going every where more casualties but lets face it these people rely on the Police to negotiate whilst they happilly blaze away a 12 hour stand off they the shooter don't have any rules or morals.

Condolences to all the affected people from this event, I can hear those screws of the Govt turning now guys wait for it...........................

I hate to sound insensitive and self-serving, but the "gun control" mob will co-opt this tragedy to further their agenda.

They've already been complaining of firearms and ammunition "stock-piling" during the COVID-19 epidemic, and now law abiding citizens will be pilloried and treated like potential criminals, just because they engage in a non-politically correct activity. The media will lead with anything that increases ratings. They aren't satisfied with reporting the news, they manufacture it to formulate public opinion.

The gun control mob watched the knee jerk reaction to gun control in Australia and New Zealand, and they're drooling.

I cringed when I heard the first reports of this tragedy, not because of the senseless horror and loss to the innocent victims and their families, but because I knew that I would be the victim of senseless persecution because I'm a gun enthusiast.

My perception if open carry is common, this kind of action would't go further than the first couple of shots.

Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.

This one has been planned extensively - at a minimum for months.

He (according to the news) had 2 cars skinned /logo decal marked as RCMP police cars ( right down to unit serial numbers) and had uniform clothing - this isn't something you just "snap" into...

And the first?? 2 victims are correctional personnel of some sort.

The police news update said ..." some of the victims appear random..."\

This is another incomprehensible violent, selfish, intolerable act. I have nothing but deep sympathy for those families who are now grieving, the friends who now have a hole in thier heart and colleagues thinking how will we be without...?

What angers me, to the point of boiling rage, is that nothing will be done about this. The issue is not firearms, nor any other weapon of choice. It is self centeredness and an absence of discipline.

This is the result of a society where "fairness" means every child wins a prize for turning up. Is it a result of never hearing "no, you will not." It is a result is parents shrugging thier shoulders and saying "what can we do?" It is a result of people listening to psychologists talk in a clinical manner about children who must not be subjected to binary choices and outcomes, but negotiated with, when thier cognitive capacity and experience is unable to fathom such complex choices.

We, as a society, really are overdue at looking at the root cause of these despicable actions.

The cause is pretty simple. It's self-centredness. In places, it's narcissism. It is undeniably a complete absence of self-discipline which was taught at an early age, in a complete family environment, through cause and effect.

It simply not good enough mourning more victims.

It is simply stupid "banning" firearms.

It is simply cowardly not addressing the self discipline issue that comes right down to parents and every bloody individual there is.

I hope the loved ones left behind find peace soon enough. They did not deserve this torture.

What an absolutely appalling loss of innocent life.
I am sure those with restricting firearms on their minds, are primed and ready to spring into action.

All laws are made for the criminally minded and stupid as a base line, we all accept that.

Unfortunately over the years, simple knee jerk (and vote winning with the sheeple) law making and amending, has become the norm, right across the West.

It's simply easier to ban something for everyone, than to address the problems and causes directly.

Unfortunately, once again, a "good guy" with a gun was required to end the evil actions of a "bad guy" with a gun. While the vast majority of the world is comprised of good people, there will always be that very small number of people who are pure evil and will victimize others until stopped by a deadly use of force. These evil people are always able to obtain a firearm since they don't care about following enacted firearms laws. The other really sad part of this tragedy is that there was an insufficient number of law enforcement officers available to immediately deal with the gunman. As we saw in Texas during 2 church shootings there, an armed citizen ended the violence before the police could arrive on scene.

It has been said many times " when seconds count the police are just minutes away". Legal president has clearly established that police have no obligation or responsibility to protect anyone. That responsibility rests with the individual who will find that a bit dicey when he follows the new laws and the criminal continues to ignore them.

Kind of odd but this isn't really being covered at all in the states that I can see. Most of the reports I've found are coming from international news sources rather than our own. Just a brief highlight on the news. The guy was 51 so he's not some spoiled brat kid that didn't grow up in a respectful environment. Beyond that, I don't know enough to form an opinion on anything. No mention of the type of weapons used. Very little about the actual crimes committed.

You can bet the screams of 'ban AR15's' will be loud, if one was used in this appalling attack or not. .

Also they're reluctant to spill if he had a licence or not. Those two things are usually meaning he had something simple to start and was licenced. We may NEVER get a clear answer to those things, just clouds. The media will be the worst enemy, already there's far too much speculation...much like Covid19.

Seems this morning they are almost sure the shooter was unlicensed and in posession of the guns illegaly , they should be positive they issue them ! They can tell simply by punching your name up in a computer whether or not you are licenced, but leaving the slightest bit of truth out allows the press to spice up the story which certainly doesn't need any more speculation. As for the line that one good guy with a gun could have ended it, well that just doesn't cut it in this case , the shooter was wearing an RCMP uniform and driving a mock cruiser, how many people would have met him at the door with a loaded gun having not known what was happening beforehand. And that's just the case the public just wasn't warned in time. Funny we get unsolicited warnings in the middle of the night on our cell phones to tell us to maintain social distancing but narry a word to tell us some flake is going door to door shooting people and setting their homes on fire. It's an unfortunate situation and heartbreaking to say the least but in the end SEVERAL GOOD GUYS WITH GUNS ENDED IT THE PROPER WAY!

Yes, that part bothers me, they should have been quite able to state clearly withing minutes. Trying to find a way to slant it towards legal and regulated and slid off the rails. The media publishes what sells best for them...

Several good guys with a gun stopped him? What does this mean. I'm serious, I'm not seeing much at all on this. In the US, that means a civilian with a gun stopped him, not the police, etc.

I was just referring to the fact that when they were finally able to determine who they were looking for and what his location was that an RCMP Tactical team was able eliminate the threat with extreme prejudice ! A fitting end but unfortunate he was able to do what he did. If you google CTV news online you should be able to follow the ongoing investigation. From the sounds of things there will probably be more dead as the forensic teams sift through the burnt out ruins of 5 homes as there are still people missing.

I read this morning that the police knew about him and did nothing. Much the same as the deranged kid that shot up the Parkland High School in Florida a few years ago. Canada needs to adopt a good healthy dose of American style civil disobedience should these gun bans come to pass. The anti-gun argument is so old, tired and has been proven over and over to be flat out wrong.

Ok, thanks for the clarification but as I said earlier this is a difference in communication styles. Nothing wrong with that but a bit confusing from the American standpoint. We don't usually call the Police "good guys with a gun" they are simply the police, not that they aren't good guys, don't mean to imply they aren't, we just generally call a good guy with a gun a civilian bystander type. Everyone knows the police have guns. I'll try that CTV.

The PM used the "military weapon" buzz word in the only statement I have seen. In which he said he would move to ban them. Who did not see that coming before the next of kin were notified. Evil men will continue to do evil things with what is at there disposal (knives, cars ,rocks, hammers...). All that is needed for evil men to do evil is for good men to do nothing which is exactly what will happen when the good men (law abiders) are disarmed.

This said from someone who along with the Wife has 1 or 2 tv's on in the background on the news, pretty much thru the morning and night.. (our awake hours). And 99% of the time on news channels.
We get Detroit news stations so you'd think we'd of heard something passed along from Windsor, but didn't. It wasn't until reading this topic that I was informed..... :dunno:
After seeing this I found some info online, but facts are few.

I did see news from Detroit about a rash of Fake police in older police type cars decked out to look real. A few had been arrested but authorities believe they are part of a bigger organized group pulling over cars and robbing people at gun point. A warning has been put out for people to be aware of it.

TV Media just rushes thru to get to the ratings making stories. Online stories ..... have no fact checking. I read a online report from Chicago about a shooting/arrest where the culprit used a Automatic revolver :rolleyes:

Speaking of Chicago, we are about 3 hours from there. We get tv news from the west side of the state that includes Chicago nearly every evening, but rarely anything about the shootings.
I found a site online where I can listen in to calls to Chicago police scanners. On a Friday night with decent weather it wont take ten minutes for a 'Shots Fired' call to come in.

I looked this up today and found a graph similar to the CV-19 graphs. About the number of shootings/times/... etc

According to CTV, the gunman was not permitted to have any type of weapon from crossbows to firearms due to a rage incident years earlier. The weapons while not identified were said to be most likely unlicensed which I need a Canadian to explain what that means. I'm assuming it means they are not registered.

We need a possession and acquisition licence to purchase, possess, buy-sell-trade, or purchase ammo. You need a course before you can get one unless you were there in the beginning when we just went to the police station and got it. That was 1978. Now without a licence, you're an unlicensed guy... Aragorn I knew what you meant by the statement referring to a good guy with a gun I live minutes from the Michigan border and have done US gun shows for 40 plus years having bee a past member of the OGCA and long time member of the MAACA. Not having concealed or open carry in Canada means the only ones out in public are the police. I keep in touch with US events as probably 75% of the news I watch is on the Fox network. I hope you were able to connect with the CTV news online to follow the NS shootings.

In the Bush years I held a concealed carry permit valid in 40 US states issued through the Iowa Bureau of Justice , went through the course fingerprinting and all .That expired in the first Obama term and was rejected when I replied for renewal. We don't have concealed or open carry here so no good guys with guns unless you shoot an intruder threatening your family within the home and even then you will be arrested and dragged through the legal process.

Followup question on the licensing of firearms or owners. I understand that owners must be licensed but isn't it also true that firearms of at least specific types must be registered? I ask specifically because I visit Nambu world on a regular basis and I believe it is a Canadian based site and they are always mentioning they know exactly how many of such and such handgun is in Canadian hands.

Handguns are in two seperate classes, those with barrel lengths over 4" are classed as restricted and can be purchased by anyone who holds a valid PAL ( possession and acquisition licence) that has also completed the restricted portion of the Canadian firearms training course Handguns with barrel lengths under 4" or in calibers 22 rimfire, .25 .32 centrefire became classed as prohibited around 1998 and only persons with what is referred to as 12-6 status can own, buy or trade these prohibited pistols. The exception being in the event of a prohib owners death they can be passed down. Full automatics became prohibited on January 1st 1978 and only owners at the time can still possess them, these to the best of my knowledge can not be passed down after the current owners death. There is a whole different class for guns converted from FA to SA that I don't fully understand but as an example I bought 68 guns from an estate last year but there were 2 I couldn't own a FA 1928 Thompson and an FNC1 converted from FA to SA. I contacted a friend who now ons some of the FA's I disposed of in 1977 and he purchased the Thompson but could not own the FA FN converted from FA to SA. Because he is also a registered Canadian Dealer he was able to have the FN in his inventory with a letter from the executer. Go figure that one out! Because our gun laws were written by bureaucrats that have the collective intelligence of a bag of hammers when it comes to guns we have laws that only a lawyer can navigate.

Yes a terrible tragedy and why the RCMP didn't initiate the "amber alert" is beyond all logic, some bureaucratic heads should roll for that blunder, but unfortunately in this new age we live in, the idea of somebody actually taking responsibility for their own actions........well...... "get the broom out and sweep it under the carpet". A firearm used in self defense in this country is liable to get you in a whole pile of trouble with the law, we as citizens are told that's why we have the RCMP and regional police forces, finally after what was it...... "18hrs". More often than not, home owners that do defend their life using a firearm are usually treated with greater hostility than the perpetrator of the crime.

Yes the little man from Quebec, "our fearless leader" that emerges from his cuckoo clock every morning to momentarily cuckoo about Covid 19 will seize the opportunity relentlessly to punish legal law abiding gun owners with a new round of arbitrary gun laws, of coarse in the name of "public safety". If this current gov't that makes "knee jerk decisions" is serious about saving lives then the same logic should be applied to reinstate alcohol prohibition laws....think of all the lives that would be saved annually from drunk driving. What about the costs to our health care system let alone the social misery alcohol has caused on and off our First Nations reserves.

As far as the monies go that's no problem.....the Central Bank will just fire up the printing press and further devalue our currency......sometimes I think the Cuckoo bird is spending our country away into the stratosphere purposely to further his global quest. I don't see that changing any time soon as the upcoming generation are by and large a bunch of entitlements and look to the gov't to solve all their problems, sorry to say I think we are stuck with "birdbrain" for some time yet.

Word from a pro-gun group here in the United State is that Canada's Prime Minister just banned over 1500 types of firearms. Use ends now. All must be turned in in two years time. They claim two of the banned types were involved in the shooting but did not mention which two or how they learned this as I still haven't seen the types of firearms used in the shootings. The shootings were the reason behind the ban.

Smoke and mirrors. I didn't realize that Newtown, Connecticut and Las Vegas, Nevada, both in the United States, as well as Christchurch New Zealand had been annexed by Canada. All used as a justification for banning "assault rifles" in Canada. Over 1500 variants of 11 basic platforms banned. I'm actually grateful that they didn't ban the Winchester Model 94 (and all of its many variants), that was used by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau during his assault on the Canadian National War Memorial and Parliament, in Ottawa. Brenton Tarrant also had a Model 94 in Christchurch.

1500 variants of 11 basic platforms determined overnight, by a government that can't define "middle class".

Fortunately, indigenous peoples of Canada are not impacted by the ban because of Section 35. They can keep their banned firearms until they find a suitable replacement. (No slight intended to our indigenous peoples.)
