Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori & Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf Mausers

Stopped by the gun store to pick up some rifles and the owner pulled out three Mausers and offered them to me for $400.00 each. The Spanish Carbine rechambered in 308Win was of no interest to me but the Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori & Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf Mausers did, although I don't know that the 1912 Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori is worth the price.

He's not planning on putting them on the sale shelf for a week or two so I have time to mull them over in m mind... so many other rifles I want to get.. and $400.00 hmmm...

The 1912 Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori has closet rust in the barrel that is easily heavy and liberal, no pitting from what I could see but lost of surface rust on maybe 15% of the barrel mostly in the first 8 inches from the muzzle, must be more under the wood. I is all matching, no import marks, missing the cleaning rod, bore is clean.

The 1988 Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf is super clean more the blue is near perfect. No rust on the blue, a bit on the bolt minor, all matching numbers, clean bore, nothing missing. Does have import marks near the muzzle.

There are so many Swedish Mausers around in first-class condition that I would not waste a thought on one with a rusty barrel. The Oberndorf-made Mauser is much rarer, and if everything else were the same, that is the one I would go for.

I was not really considering the rusted rifle, especlly since there are so many other rifles I would like to have besides it. The Oberndorf does interest me and from what I can tell $400.00 is a decent price. Just don't know if I want it that bad. I've been eyeballing a Winchester model 1890 .22LR project gun that's in need of help, zero blue, that looks like oiled and steelwooled to remove rust, but is all there and functions at $200.00

She's in really poor condition, and the seller won't flex on the price. But shes is one of the most interesting .22's I've seen in a while; I'd love to get inside her and see how she works.

That's NOT really poor condition Bill, I've worked on far worse. If the bore is OK and doesn't need a liner then you're probably goo. For refinish, I'd bead blast to remove all rust and then paper polish gently until you come up to a 250 grit polish and shine. Then into a hot blue...the wood could just use a scotch brite and Watco oil I think. Once done you won't regret the money as it'll look about new. Lots of small parts but yes, they're a mastery of machining and engineering. I wouldn't sweat the $200...if it were nice it would be LOTS more.

The bore is dirty, closet dust from the looks of it. Making it hard on me Jim LOL.... I was fascinated with the action and feed.

$200 is a pretty good price on one of those.
Buy it. If you have regrets, someone else will give you $300 for it.

I ain't the only one Bill, I'll bet the bore is about perfect, some older ones were ratty but most .22 are good. He's right, I'd take that gun right now without hesitation just for a user.

The .22 bullets are outside lubricated, meaning rust in the bore can only be from neglect and water, if at all. Probably only dirty with cupboard dust clinging to the lube inside. I'd take the .22 over the larger calibres.

Hope it's there, love to see it on the expose' after the purchase. I'd love to have it myself. I saw a rough example in .22 short, would have been a gallery gun. It was way up around $900 CDN asking...

I've got that 1890's grandkid, a 62A. Big fun. I agree with the others here.

I recall clearly having a Winchester 61 and a 1906. Both were flawless and went through more than their share of ammo in far less time that it took to load. A friend had the 1890, neat gun.

So many guns, just not enough money :) I was just at his shop and he still has them. There are other rifles that I'd like more so if I get the Oberndorf I can't get the other which is another Garand.

Took everyone's advice and went back to his shop on Thursday and picked up the Winchester 1890 .22 Slide Action. (get a lecture from my wife when I told her after the fact) I couldn't get him to go lower than $200.00. I cleaned the bore and it's dark but still has rifling so I wont need to sleeve it. I'll put it on paper with some subsonic next time I'm at the range. Here are some pictures I took today before taking my wife to pick Persimmons, 60 pounds of them and my purchase is all forgiven ;)

OH.. he just got in a 1903 Springfield newer receiver with a 1907 barrel. It looks like its been Black Oxide packetized mish-mash of parts. $900.00 nice shooter not much more then that.

I’d take a hard pass on the 1903. It’s not worth anything near that.

You’re definitely ahead of the game on the Winchester. I browsed through some sold listings on GunBroker just now. I’d put the market value at more like $350 right now. Nice snag!

Yeah, I had no interest in the 1903 and nicely told the shop that it was a Mixmaster and not really anything a collector would want. I'm sure though he will sell it at $900.00 to someone.

How do you look at sold listings on GunBroker? I was looking at listing for this rifle and agree on the $350.00 price. I'll sit on it a year or two before I consider selling it. Need to enjoy it for awhile.

I'm thinking about doing a rust blue on the Winchester but need to research the rifle first and see what's what, it needs a small crack in stock repaired that I noticed as well

I saw the small crack, you'll need to clean out all the old glue first and the residual oil. I used to use "microbed" by Brownell's but don't know if they still make it. Saw the ring in the bore, not so unusual... Just a good cleaning and that should take most of the active rust. If you decide to blue it, we can all talk further then. Yes, take it out and warm it up. Don't fear the real good ammo, it won't come apart.

Searching sold listings on GunBroker isn’t as streamlined as it is on eBay.

First, select “advanced search” near the search bar. Then select “completed listings.”

This is the real shortcoming of the GunBroker search system. This will only show you ALL completed listings — even if they didn’t sell.

So what I prefer is to add the “No Reserve” filter and sort by “Bid Count: High to Low.”

Just browse through listings with bids and you’ll get an idea of what your item is worth.

Thanks again Jim. You always give good advice, finding the real good 22 long ammo is tough! I think Winchester did a special run of them a few years back when they did the WRF, but I didn't buy any at the time. So the subsonic CCI CB 22 Long is about all that is available for these old girls anymore; I keep a good stock of them on hand for my rifles that use 22 LONG and for testing 22 rifles after I fix them.

I just mean good quality full power. Even stingers or yellow jackets...but I suppose that's short there right now. Gun will work fine I think...

The Winchester 1890 has a feeding problem and I found that its the magazine spring causing it. Numrich has them for $5.75 so I've added it to my cart for the nest time I place an order. It would be interesting though to see if I could anneal the orgainl spring expand it and them re-temper to being it back to life.

I found out that the rifle is the Thrid version of this modle and was manufactured sometime in 1910, that make it 110 years old.

Fun for a project but I think getting a new one is better. I had an Uzi mag here that had been blocked and welded shut...and the spring was as tough and resilient as the finest bailing wire. Without hesitation it was ripped out and discarded. New spring, no problems.

I was able to get the Winchester 1892 out to the range yesterday and all is not well with the barrel. I'm going to slug the barrel to see if it too far gone and needs to be sleaved, but for sure a crown is in order and minimum. Admittedly, I was not shooting the best ammunition, I took out some of my very old (Post-1961) Western SUPER 2 LONG ammunition, I sure a collector is cringing right now but I couldn't find any 22 long modern anywhere so I broke into my collectible stuff, on the upside, it was a partial box and only took 5 rounds. LOL

The bullets were key-holing and the group was massive at 50ft.

I’ve seen a couple videos on relining a 22. It looks, probably, deceptively simple. I’d give it a shot!
