Hi guys
Andy from italy.
I saw today on a gun store this m1 with this odd mount.
Its a breda, barrel b sid 1955, stock have serial number of the rifle on. It come with this danish ir device.
Im trying to find info but i cant find nothing. Anyone have never saw anything like this before?

That's better, never have I seen it mounted on an M1 rifle, just the M3 carbine...makes sense they would want it too. Very nice find. Don't have any info...

i have 32 m1 garand and i read all about it but this is very odd
Time to show us a bit of an expose' then...maybe a few pics. This one, others will be along and perhaps can tell you. One here was issued M1 rifle in 1960 and may have heard from his elders about this scope. We do have some collectors here that have the infra red scope though, I last saw one in the hardware in 1975/76 mounted on an M3 with full equipment but don't know if it worked...these look awkward on the rifle.Quote:

I know of two collectors that have the I. R. mounted on US M1 rifles. I have seen one in person too. They use the same bracket holes as the M1C but a different mount. The really difficult part of this unit is finding the batteries and pouch from what I understand. On the Danish I. R. the bracket or mount is welded on to the receiver.
It was reported that US Special Forces were using the I.R. on the M1 Rifle in 1962 and it must have seen limited service in the early days of Viet Nam too.
There are also photos of the M14 Rifle with the I.R.

A few years ago, a number of Danish contract, Italian made M1 receivers with unknown welded scope mounts showed up in Canada. I conversed with a few of the owners who provided the below pictures. This rifle has an additional mount bolted between the two brackets. The thought is the brackets would support an AN/PAS-4 or a AN/PVS-1 attached to it.

I already saw welded danish contract mount. The danish seller that sold me my m1 have one stripped.
But i never saw one like mine....

I have seen and handled the M1 Rifle with I. R. scope, it is heavy, awkward and tends to lean to the left side. I also had the chance
many years ago to view the I.R. on a issue M1 carbine (not M2) during a dark night. range was very limited
A guy I worked with was a Marine sniper in Nam and was using the IR device on an M14. He was up in a tree scanning the woodline across a rice paddy when a round hit the IR unit dead center and knocked him out of the tree. The Charlie evidently had a Dragunov scope with IR detector so the unit was like shining a searchlight. If he had aimed a little below the light source he would have hit the Marine in the head. He never used it again.

These pictures were provided by another collector (Andy Skizzo Bertelli). The chin weld (or higher) requirement appears to make a "precision" shot questionable. The m/65 scope data plate bears the crown and HTK markings indicating the Hærens Tekniske Korps, or Danish Army Technical Corps.

IR device used by the Danish army, but made in Germany. So I wonder if the Bundeswehr ever used it as well.
