I found the problem with the stringing shots!!

I finally found the problem with my stringing shots.:lol: The only reason I am confessing to this is that someone may have the same problem someday, otherwise I would keep my goober mouth shut for once.

It was the trigger. I initially wanted to take full advantage of the A5 scoped rifle, so I had put an aftermarket trigger in to "improve" my accuracy:dunno:. It evidently was bearing on something:bash:, because I finally got disgusted and jerked it out, put the old trigger in to put the rifle back in the rack, and just for grins, I decided to shoot a 75 yard group (had been sighting in an open sighted Siamese Mauser in 45-70 with 55 grs 3031 behind 300 gr Sierras and I needed a break:surrender:). First five shot group from that old Springfield had all five shots in one ragged hole at 75 yards:super:. Moved back to 100 yards and got several nice 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" groups with the usual 3-shot cloverleafs and two out a bit. :beerchug: That SA 12-15 barrel can still put them in the black. After shooting those full bore 45-70's, that 30-06 felt like a 22.:D Needless to say, I feel a bit sheepish.

Moral of story - don't change what SA spent so much time refining.:nono:

OK, let me have it. I know I should have checked, but the trigger?:confused:

I finally bit the bullet and got the glasses I have need for some time. They came in yesterday. I can see again! It makes it possible for me to shoot open sighted rifles, but I look a bit like Ben Franklin.

Are you now a good shootin' four eyed redneck? Hell, I shoot with tri-focal glasses. I aim for the center of the blurred target. Don't miss. Only thing in focus in my sight picture is the front post. Gonna' get some contacts soon and that should change things a lot.

I never mentioned changing the trigger because I never thought it to be important. Now I know better. :thup: It was a M1917 aftermarket trigger that I prefer for 03's. I have a stockpile of them. I prefer very light trigger pulls - very light. Too light for most people.:move eek:

I can see the leaves on trees now. My loss of vision was so gradual, I did not realize what I had lost.:madsmile: I can see the front sight, target and rear sight now. It makes quite a bit of difference. Kind of hard to get used to wearing them though. Mine look like Ben Franklin's. Little glasses, due to vanity I guess. I have been shooting on a daily basis, and today was one of my better days, even in drizzling rain. I put 2-liter plastic bottles out in the woods and try to hit them with one shot. It is fun.:super: None are closer than 75 yards, and in brush. When you hit one, you know it.

Remember going to Saints games back in the eighties. Couldn't read the player's names or numbers from where I was sittin'. Got my first pair of glasses not long after. Went to another game and it was like having a new life. Man...I could see everything. Guess my buddies got tired of hearing about how I could see again, but nobody complained.

Little bit back in the old not seeing as well as I would like to boat now. Will get those contacts and troop to the range in Garyville with '03's in tow to see what happens.

Sad to say but the last time I was out shooting my M1903 the rear sight was kinda hard to keep in focus. Oh the wonders of age and tired eyes:)

Glad you found the problem, Jim. It almost sounds as if there's something wrong with that particular trigger assembly. A rough spot on the tip of the sear?
Anyways, I've had to start wearing reading glasses, with my contacts, since last year. Tried bifocal contacts, but they're too much of a compromise at both ends. They actually work by having the center section for close-up, and the outer ring for distance. You have to wear them for a couple weeks to re-train your brain as to how it iterprets the data from the eye! Couldn't get used to them.

I took it apart this morning. I can see a straight little line on one side in the wood. When I tightened the receiver screws, the receiver would be in a nine line bind.:thdown: The nice part is that I made the changes/checks everyone suggested, and I suspect the rifle is more accurate as a result. :beerchug:

I am still a little uncomfortable wearing glasses all the time. I have worn reading glasses for years, but this is different. I still have some other body parts that need rejuvenating.:super:

My continuing problem with shooting with open sight is the front sight seems to grow hair. Target seems in focus - rear sight picture in focus - front sight looks like I am trying to align the bristles of a tooth brush!

I had an uncle who was a real jokester. He would have added the following to my above comment. "I gave up on using open sights, I use the sound shot technique - I hear a sound, and shot toward the sound". He would have never done that, but he could sure tell make people believe he was serious.

Glad you solved the problem. Yes, one's vision changes slowly, darn that getting old stuff. I'm sure I need new glasses as I find myself getting closer to the computer screen to read all these wonderful replys. I've worn glasses since I was 6 and I still hate them at times!

I was born blessed with 20-10 vision. When I as a kid, I had a friend who wore glasses, and I always wondered what he actually saw. I oicked out a lone tree in a field on which I could see individual leaves from the fence. I figured as long as I could see those leaves, my eyesight was OK. A number of years ago I had a chance to go visit that tree, Some peckerhead had cut it down.

It has been a while since I could see an individual leaf on a tree at any distance. I spent an hour in the woods yesterday just looking at stuff. Mold on trees, colors of little things. Bugs, birds, whatever. It was interesting.

As far as glasses go.... Many, many years ago I had a job transfer. As I'm driving around the new locations I tried reading the street signs. By the time I could read them it was too late to make the turn. Since I had to get a new drivers license I figured I'd better get my eyes checked. Sure enough, afterward I could see the leaves and not just the forest.

I guess that hog (pig?) you had trouble with a few years back would be alot easier to deal with now.:cheers:

It was the trigger housing binding against the stock that caused the problem. If I tightened the rear screw I was "bending" the receiver.

I had this project, about 35 years ago. I had to pick up, load, haul 120 Mi., unload, sort out, place (trial & error) for fit. No rocks were cut. There is a two rock layer, below ground level, that is the foundation. No morter was used. All rocks are just dry laid. I still have a large assortment, left over, stored in my back yard. ~ the only rock project I have ever had. :beerchug:

That is a killer dry wall. I like flat rock, I like big rock, tight dry joints like you have there, and I like curves. Great job. Any flint in your leftover pile? (Pedernales point pic attached).

This is my second cistern. The first is 3200 gallons, fed from the roof and gutter system-that's my bath and dish water. I have a jet pump in the house I think you saw that system. It works great and that cistern at 6' deep, has never drawn down more than 12" in six years of usage. Rain keeps it full. I built that one in '95.

This second cistern (it will have a nice rock face) will be fed by a spring up the hollow about 100 yards. Always runs but a pencil lead in the summer. It's going to hold right at 4000 gallons. I'm putting a Lehman's stainless hand pump in it for potable water, and the over flow and gravity draw-off will go to the garden. After I pour the cap (7"), I'm going to pull 5" of dirt over it and turf it over like an old Normandy bunker. Make a great elevated archery platform and rifle bench too.

I brought in 50 tons of soil for a new start last fall. I'll try to avoid posting any giant cabbages around here! When it comes to water, it pays to have a back-up. Most people don't even know where their water comes from! We're heading into dry times, boys.

The piezometric drawdown in the Castle Hayne Aquifer from the Aurora, NC phosphate mine now reaches all the way to New Jersey. Other than shallow ground water and entrapments, it is one of only two aquifers in NC. I was to testify in a lawsuit concerning encroachment and the judge asked me my expertise. When I told him I was testifying as a Hydrologist, he replied he had never heard of any such discipline and declined to allow me to testify. When I explained that I had a Master's Degree from a major university in reservoir mechanics and transient pressure analysis, he dismissed me entirely.

There will be a day of reckoning, and it is going to be violent. This state has no statutes regarding water wells. They just drill a hole, drop in some PVC pipe and a pump and start pumping. No clue as to ground water contamination is. My neighbor's water well is in his pig pen (the well was there first). He has now drilled three water wells within 50 feet of each other. When I tried to help him, he said he already had an expert - some DA local with a drilling rig. When the DA asked me "just how many water wells have you drilled?", and I responded with "over 6,000", he took me for a BS'er. I watched that moron drill the well and I told my neighbor it would make sand in thirty days - it took about 90 days before it sanded up completely.

It reminds me of the morons who have some jerk with a hoist in a tree rebuild their engines and then wonder why it failed in about 4 months.

Have you seen the results of the testing of rural water wells showing significant amounts of estrogen contamination? It comes from the septic tanks. Ever wonder why the girls are growing huge hooters at age 12 these days and the boys are looking a little effeminate?

Pete, ~ a little more of that old project. Those rocks are hard (building quality) Sandstone, some heavy > no flint there. However, I think I have a couple of pieces of other stuff (suitable stones) & a piece of Obsidian (sp?), from Old Mexico, that I will dig out & send to you. :beerchug:

I'd say that stone in the middle is a cup for a bow drill. Those pedernales pieces in the second are stuff I spalled and knapped. Great material.

Jim, I don't doubt the estrogen in the wells. I am lucky enough to be one of the highest elevation sites on the mountain. My water comes off the shales that trap it there for months and years, therefore the flows are somewhat stabilized. Biggest fear:giardia from deer turds. Maybe cryptospyridium. I filter to 2 microns before I drink anything these days(ceramic).

I plan to drill a well in 2010 for a third H2O source, by the way. That will make only two wells in the hollow, and the nearest well head I know of aside from those would be 3/4 of a mile from here.

16" block walls in this new puppy below grade, filled with 3000 psi concrete. Gonna be a long week and the cash is flowing allright, the other way though.
