Here is a pic of a 19998 Kraig I picked up. Very well cared for rifle. When picked up it was missing rear sights. I purchased what was advertised as a 1998 sight. As shown, the wood and sights don’t match. Where did I go wrong? To get it to fit I’m going to have to do some carving. Thanks.
Several different rear sight went on these rifles over time. Others more knowledgeable will fill you in, but just judging by the chip on the front of the opening in your upper guard, and the length of the opening, I am inclined to think yours might have been fitted with the 1901 type.
Agreed the hand guard appears to be for the Model 1901 rear sight. The sight you bought appears to be a Model 1896 both correct for a model 1898 Krag but shaped differently. Krag screw holes are placed the same so any model rear sight, 1892,1896, 1898(discontinued because it was calibrated for "too hot" new ammo), 1901 and 1902 will fit, but hand guards are design specific.

A 1901 rear sight is going to be easier to find and less expensive than a hand guard for a Model 1896 rear sight. One other concern if you plan on shooting much is the height of the front sight blade. The Model 1896 rear sight used a shorter front sight blade, Model 01 and 02 where higher. Different zeros.
Replacement Krag front sight blades are available too, if you wanted to get one so you don't mess up the one you have. That is if you need taller to start with and have to take it down a bit to zero. Numrich and others have them.
Is there anyway to figure out what stock I have, so I can try and find the correct sight for it? Thanks.

The rifle came with that hand guard for a Model 1901 rear sight I would get a Model 1901 rear sight for it. Be advised that the screws are also specific to sights and the "01 takes a "long headed" screw. Sights can be found on ebay, Gunbroker, Gun Auction, generally screws also usually separately. S&S Firearms usually has repro screws and Gun Parts corp. usually has them.
Don't mess up your model 1901 hand-guard. Original Krag hand-guards have become more valuable than the sights. (The 1901 sight is infinitely better for shooting than the model 1896 sight).
Krag hand-guards are under spring-pressure from the 'clips' riveted to the wood. It is wise to store a loose one, with a Quarter twisted into the rear-clip and a Penny or Nickel twisted into the front clip. This counteracts the spring tension during storage.
When putting a Krag hand-guard on, or taking it off, remove the rear-sight from the barrel.
Take the barreled/action out of the stock. Clean any old dried 'gunk' off the barrel with solvent, leaving a slippery film.
The hand-guard can be easily put on or taken off the barrel at the muzzle.
It can be gently slid along the barrel taper without trauma.
Hand-guards 'snapped' on or off a barrel will ultimately crack!

I have searched every web site I can think of and they are all sold out of 1901 rear sights. Does anyone here have an extra? I willing to trade the 1896 sight one for one.
Why not offer a WTB or WTT in the forum provided, more frequent it with that sort of thing in mind.

Good luck R&R! I second that on the 1901 sight. A lot of older weapons were arsenal refurbished, especially coming back from Cuba and the Philippines. The arsenals would install upgrades as a matter of course. If your handguard has the long hole, that is probably what happened to your rifle. The 1901 sight is really nice for target shooting (use the little peep) and in the down position gives you a pretty decent sight picture.
