This guy really looks young...
Well, when I see myself in the mirror now, I feel that those fighters could all very well be my kids…
I had several cases of taking a man through basic and then having his child come through. One case of a daughter first and then a father after and one son followed by his mother (A trained nurse). I never had a grandson though. Just two generations, then I knew it was time to go. Yes, they were even younger than my sons.
Combat soldiers usually are young, throughout the ages. Age from 16 to about 20. Old enough to fight, young enough to learn quickly, fast, strong, no bad habits yet, etc. Older ones keep the country going, supply the front line, etc. Fact of war.
Gramps, born 1900, reached the front line in 1917…
You have to be 18, young and indestructible... who else would charge the MG up the hill? We old guys would say, "Are you nuts? Call the artillery!"
Think about them young men well boys really I think our last ANZAC enlisted when he was 14 the youngest recipient of the VC (Possibly) was 15 years 3 months Andrew Fitzgibbon 1845-1883.
Jack Cornwell was 16 years old when he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross after the Battle of Jutland.
In WWII we had young men not barely 18 flying spitfires/hurricanes in the BoB and in other armed services.
Today our 18 year old's I sadly shake my head for some want it all for nought, won't work to save themselves, living off welfare, no money to buy food but can buy coke a cola and take away's with the dabbling in certain dubious pass times.
Bob Seijas that's the old story of the young bull and the old bull, a herd of cows down the bottom of the hill, the young one is all for running down there and having one.
Where as the older bull says why don't we walk down there and have them all !!!!! Such is the hard earned knowledge of old age?
