Heard this while traveling back home a little while ago. Rush Limbaugh said that we will probably apologize for taking the ship back.
He added, for sure we will apologize for being there in the first place.
During WWII, the US and other nations put Naval gun crews on cargo ships; equipment was usually one or more 5" guns.
While the flag country probably wouldn't want to arm the crew, I don't see why even the smaller countries couldn't put a few members of their armed forces on a ship with a .50 MG or a 20mm or a couple of anti-tank rockets, which should be quite enough to deal with those pirates. Details about what to do with the weapons on reaching port could be worked out.
Sure, there are international naval patrols, but the pirates, like muggers, make sure they are where cops ain't. Once a ship is captured, armed force runs into a hostage situation and is pretty helpless.
(It is NOT true that the President has made a swap and the pirates will move into the White House next week. Maybe the week after.)

Just heard on news that they were 200 miles from land,so that means pirates must have had a mother ship some where, would have told the pirates to get off our ship and go back to their own ship or be shot, then I would have requested US Navy track pirate boat back to their mother ship and when found, sink the d**n thing.

Jeff Cooper once wrote a .30 MG would be all that's necessary to stop a modern pirate attack. An M-1 would be better than a fire hose. A strange world we live in where victims can't protect themselves.
I was wondering how they took over that tanker ship. Heck,it's 90 feet or so above the water. Don't ships post any kind of watch? You'd think they might notice a motor boat coming straight at them in the middle of the sea. I don't understand any of this.
There is a really simple solution to all of this, and I cannot understand why it isn't being used. Send them through in Convoys and you would need at most one or two warships to stop the piracy for each convoy. The pirates mother ships could easily be blown out of the water and machine guns could take care of the smaller boats. Sink enough of the arseholes and the rest would soon figure out that piracy is not a good idea.
Problem with this is it's the only one traveling this route, food aid to Africa,it doe's seem though like John said, get some ships that would be traveling pretty much same way and convoy them up long as possible, but merchant ships will always take shortest route to cut down expenses so they might not want to go off course to convoy up.

NY Senator Shumer said this morning that he knows that these pirates are getting their guns from American gun shows and we better block the loopholes now.
Well those merchant ships who want to take the shortest route might find it the MOST EXPENSIVE ROUTE once they pay the ransom.;)
There was an international agreement in the 1870s (IIRC) that forbade arming of merchant ships. The US of A pushed for it as we had suffered serious losses at the hands of CSA raiders in the War Between the States -- raiders that were (guess what) often armed merchantmen.
In those days a.) piracy was at a very low level and b.) there were plenty of gunboats available from the "evil imperialists" of the day to terminate any practitioners of the art -- with extreme prejudice.
I can't recall how Churchill as First Lord of the Admiralty justified arming British merchantmen in War One but he basically told the international community that they could take their "law" and shove it up his cigar and light it.
We followed Churchill's model in War's One and Two.
Dare I say it? Perhaps there aren't enough Churchills out there to deal with the current situation.
A version of the WW II Naval Armed Guard would, IMHO, work wonders on making a few pirates components of the marine food chain; other possible pirates would get the idea.
Nobody would want to pay for it - and with most ships under foreign flags of convenience that shows how much shipping owners want to invest in safety.
As I recall pirates were a problem in the past and the marines were sent in to clean them out. I believe they can do it again.:dancingbanana:
So could the SEALS.
But that assumes that the Commander in Chief isn't a gutless S*o*B who is more concerned with making the US a Socialist State and installing himself as the new Fuhrer. Oops, sorry, i meant "LEADER"...
You were right the first time, Fuhrer,or maybe Commisar.
I think you both mean 'EMIR', that is his background & religion
I think we're a little out of luck on having a Churchill to lead. Last I heard they have the Navy on site, but flying in the FBI to negotiate. :banghead::sos::ugh::mad::move eek:
These stupid seaborne chocolate covered camel jockeys are sitting in a lifeboat and making a laughingstock out of us (Not to mention our own lefty thumbsucking liberals) by tying up a multimillion dollar naval asset and allowing them to do nothing.
It's with some irony that the asset put together to handle just these situations is inactivated, this is the mission of Seal Team 6. That life boat should be full of dead and dying Somalis and all Americans should be safe aboard the Bainbridge or in flight for the CONUS.
I have the solution!
they are 250 miles from shore!
take ONE 50 caliber round and insert it into a barret M-82 rifle and shoot their motor. Now they have a long ways to "paddle to shore".
Tell them they have 10 minutes to give up the captain or one of them gets capped, and if they give the captain up we might tow them towards shore a ways.
At 10 minutes.... when they DO NOT do what we told them, put another 50 caliber round through one of the pirates head!
Tell them they have 10 minutes before the next one gets it.
That will solve the problem!
If they give up the captain then CAP all of them EXCEPT ONE and be sure to wrap them in HOG SKIN and then bring the one guy to shore with the other pirates bodies wrapped in hog skin!!
But we will pu$$y foot around and apologize that we hurt the poor muslims feelings when this is nothing more then armed robbery (pirates) at sea period.
I was thinking of telling my worthless congress men and senators this, but I know they would treat that piece of mail, fax, and / or phone call like they have the rest of them.
NO ANSWER.
Home intruders are there for 3 things, and one is not to wake you up and say hello. They want to rob you, kill you, or rape the females. An intruder in your home is free game, shoot to kill. If I was on a ship, that would be my home. Same defense, shoot to kill. They will get the message for the next time.
I don't see a reason to *****foot around, no negotiation, no bagaining.
What the ....:dunno:
It's just wishful thinking on my part, but I'd like to see a Seal squad deploy from a sub in hover 50' below that boat. Pop up grab the captain and pull him overboard and at the same time filling the boat with a few frag grenades.
John, I agree. There's no reason to rush. The situation will turn out OK in the end. The pirates aren't in a position of power regardless of what they may say. Their only ace in the hole is the Captain and if they kill him, they will die very quickly. They may be ignorant savages but they can easily figure this out. Rick
Now it's being reported that the pirates have called for reinforcements. A number of pirate vessels, including some previously pirated ships under outlaw control, are supposedly steaming to the area.
My guess would that there'll be an attempt to pick up the occupants of the lifeboat, including the American captain. Will U.S. forces forces prevent that from happening?
If they get away with this b.s. then the maritime concerns might just as well give in, put up a toll booth and do away with the potential violence everytime they enter the area.
They are 4 Alpha Hotel's in a life boat. This should have ended THE DAY IT STARTED. We have US warships sitting there being held hostage by 4 men in a boat that can only drift. This is more than embarrassing already. The Captain tried to escape last night and we didn't have a single asset close enough to rescue the man. Give me a break. Maybe this one will only last 443 days.
I believe, under international law, merchies aren't permitted to be armed EXCEPT IN TIME OF WAR.
Since our beloved leader ( ) has declared that we are NOT at war with Islam ( :nono: ) then our merchant ships must sally forth un-armed..... :runaway:
The real problem is the idea held by the international community and our government that weaponry is a "bad thing" even in self defense. The bad guys know they can take over these ships with nothing but a handful of men with small arms and get rich off the proceeds.
It's like the liberal belief that a woman who has been raped is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.
We really need to arm our flag merchantmen. Allowing the shipping company to contract with security agencies to have armed guards on every ship with authorization to use whatever force is necessary to "repel borders" would probably do the job. I agree that in most cases an AP round through the motors of these launches would do the job.
Ronald Reagan where are you now??
Mission of the Navy
"The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas."......Not sitting more than a mile away from four clowns in a lifeboat. If they had been in close quarters when the Captain went over the side and started swimming they could have blown the boat and the Alpha Hotel's to bits. There's no doubt in my mind Obama has ordered them to keep their distance.
I think any captured pirates should be summarily executed on the spot and fed to the sharks, but our half-Muslim half-black Fearful Leader ain't about to let that happen.
But the French had the right idea when they forcefully re-took over that pleasure vessel that the bad guys had captured. Unfortunately, one of the hostages got killed.
Maybe we should ask the Israeli's for advice and help.
