Does anyone have a copy of the Armourer instructions for fitting the M1D kit in the field? In particular showing what needs to be done to the barrel?

I don't have the Instructions you are looking for, but I can tell you if it is a GI barrel all you have to do is screw it on and head space. The scope mount mounting block was assembled to the special barrel at the armory. :o
Its to convert a standard barrel to take a mount block?
I only ever had one in hand and the only difference was the barrel had been machined back so the shank was longer. That is, to allow the block to be slipped on and crushed between the barrel and receiver. You could fit a block to a standard barrel if you were careful.
thanks
I thought I had read somewhere that kits were issued to Armourers to convert rifles in the field. I am sure I once saw a pamphlet with the machining details, but may be mistaken
The kit would have included the M1D replacement barrel with block pre-installed.
The vast majority of M1Ds are with the “555” M1D specifically machined barrels. However, there have been a few that came from the CMP with the standard “448” part number. Those were obviously standard barrels that were converted by someone. Springfield Armory??
Many thanks
There was a documented U.S.M.C. procedure for converting a rifle to an M1C Configuration. Have a copy somewhere.
That can’t be right. M1Cs were only made at Springfield Armory. The receivers were drilled and tapped before heat treating.
when I find the document I will post it - never say never
I look forward to seeing what you’ve got. Maybe you are thinking of the so called USMC 1952 (or whatever you want to call it), which is just a regular M1C with a Kollmorgan scope and different mount.
No, it was a procedure with ordering info for parts drills and taps
it is in one of the many boxes in the basement somewhere
There was an additional document that specified how to acquire the drill and tap. Have not found that yet. I doubt any collector would accept a USMC modified Receiver as legitimate unless there was a video of Col Puller him self with his black and decker.
See Sec. 7.2

Mark, that's not a document, it's a technical manual. A complete instruction on how to. A document would suggest a direction to undertake conversions. It's better than just a document, which could be taken as read and left to rot. With this to light, collectors can re-examine their rifles...this would have been used.
Yes, that is interesting. Apparently Nicolaus Associates sells that set.
