I'm looking for some advice on which M14 type receiver I should use to build up a rifle with USGI parts. This will be a service grade type shooter and not a match rifle. I initially looked into getting a M1A from SA, but they told me complete guns only...no receivers. The LRB looks like a good option. I would like to avoid having to get a complete rifle just for the receiver.

The LRB recievers are top notch, and come at a top notch price. Around $800 for a standard stripped receiver, if you can find one. Expect to pay more to get one in hand as there is a wait on them because of panic buying. There is also Essential Arms, Armscorp, and Springfield. You could contact my friend Jon Wolf at M14 Parts and Armorer Servcies . He can set you up with a receiver or anything else for an M1A.
Complete used standard M1As from Springfield run around $1500 to $2000.
One with all GI parts will be higher. An LRB with all GI parts will be around $3000.
Well, scratch Armscorp from the list; the owner died & they are no longer in business.

Springfield does sell seconds at Perry. Parts are all but gone. Good luck.
If you look at GB auctions you will see that an M14 receivers are bringing top price. Your best bet might be to get on the LRB waiting list and buy the best at the same price they are getting at auction. I'm on the waiting list and hope to see my receiver in another month or two. Went on the list in late Jan. Good Luck.

Late January for an LRB? That's about the time I sent my FFL and was told about 8 months! I like your estimate better! :dunno:
I thought Essential Arms only did AR-15 parts. Are they expanding?

I'd get in line for for a Springfield Nat'l Match Grade M1A or base model if you can't afford the upgrades.
Shoot it, learn the platform and its' reloading needs.
As you grow into it, upgrad the parts to USGI, where and when you can find them.

LRB Assembled Upper Receiver by Jon Wolfe with a USGI Trigger Assembly and a cartouched USGI stock. Jon tuned the trigger for me too...he does very good work.

But my older "pre-owned" Springfield shoots very nicely too. "Pre-Owned" can be good buys. But be ready to fix minor problems like bolts that occasionally come apart and need USGI parts to work better.
Be advised, it's a military combat platform capable of MOA or better performance. BUT a base AR-15 or CMP Garand will probably easily out-shoot it and you'll have a lot of extra money for ammunition.

If you don't have one yet, a CMP Garand is a good rifle with a lot of history behind it.

I already have all the USGI parts from a previous build and would like to get a complete rifle again. Several years ago I got caught up in the whole MKS reweld affair and lost my beautiful H&R to the BATF. I do have a few Garands though and love them, but the M14 was my favorite.
It looks like the LRB might actually be the better value for me, unless I can get my hands on another type of receiver a little cheaper. I was surprised that Springfield wouldn't sell a receiver with no parts. Just need to be patient!
I just finished building one yesterday with a Armscorp receiver I purchased some time ago, will shoot it tomorrow for the first time if the wind cooperates. Armscorp are not perfect but it wasn't bad, only had to do a little stoning in two places and ream the hole for the follower rod catch for proper fit of the parts. Barrel is 6 groove 1 in 10 mid weight match from the CMP, stock is from Fred's, bolt is Springfield Inc., Oprod and gas cylinder are Smith Ent. (SEI) new offerings. Most of the parts I bartered/traded for so I don't have a lot in it. My flash hider is Calif. legal type (I don't live in Calif) so still looking for a GI flash hider but this will do for now. At last minute found my metric elevation knob is cracked, always something, will use a M1 knob for now.

I recommend the LRB. I built my rifle on the M25 receiver.

M2HB...have you had any problem with case ejection with the scope mount in place?

Thanks M2HB. I can relate to having toys you haven't shot. I've got an Armscorp rec. with excellent TRW parts in the back of the safe I haven't shot. (My shooter gun has H&R parts.) If I had lots of $ I'd have the TRW parts stripped off and put on a LRB. Kind of the "best" as issued I could get...yea I know "Parts is Parts".
I've got some extra parts I've thought about putting together a M25, but wondered about the case issue.
Wish OB would send me some $ so I could spread it around.

No they are currently out of business. I am not sure if Fulton has any receivers left. They were made by Armscor to their specs.Quote:

Springfield Armory receivers are available off and on from Champion's Choice in TN. The standard M1A receiver is listed at $575. Rear lug receivers are slightly higher.
Why not look for an older rifle in good condition. Early 80's rifles will have GI parts. TRW bolts and H&R op-rods and the like. I bought mine new but you can still find them. I saw one at the Cow Place for $1200 early this year.

What would be a good price for a USGI M14 parts kit minus barrel and bolt?
I just did a web search and saw that a company is selling this kit for $675 is that a good price? I am not sure how much bolts or barrels are going for.

I can sympathize - I was stung as well. I bought a SA first, not second about five years ago at Perry, and used the parts from the late MKS. I wonder what BATF did with the receivers? They were a bit apologetic when the came to collect the receiver.
Shouldn't we be considering Poly Tech??????? Their receivers are forged like the expensive LRB receivers. They can be bought for around $1000 for the whole gun. The bolt will have to be replaced with a hardened GI bolt but reading user reviews folks are saying all else works very well and are extremely accurate even with the Chinese barrel.
