Wild boar story for Ovidio

I am overrun with wild hogs at my place . I had a real big boar on the thermal at 80 yards , clear head shot . He went down in the tall grass and all I could see was the glow were he was . I set down the rifle and walked out there with the flashlight in my left hand . When I got close he sprang to life and burst out of the tall grass about 10 yards in front of me , charging right at me . Luckily I had a 10 mm Glock with hot and heavy loads in my right hand . I got off 6 to 8 shots in about a second one handed and he slid to a stop right in front of me . Besides being full of 10mm holes , he had a 30 cal hole in the forehead near his eye . The bullet did not penetrate the skull , just road around it and came out behind his ear . It had just knocked him out and he came to to see my bright light coming at him . He was about 200 lbs and had 3 inch tusks . My wrist is now sore .

Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrggghhhhhh.

I am just over run . I shot 1 behind the cabin , then another 2 hours later . I have 5 herds of 8 - 15 hitting the 5 feeders at the same time . I figure there are about 60 to 80 every night .

Man that's scary stuff Bob been in something similar ending up in the middle of a sleeping mob until a sow decided to charge me from under a sucker tree so quiet was I and focused on a couple of hoppers for some tucker, was basically a point and shoot with the 444 I was lucky got her through the snout next one into her chest.
At the first report the whole mob I estimated at 15-20 went in all directions from under the bushes I put 2 more rounds in the air and had one left up the spout I was pretty shaken for a few good hours.

Pity I'm not over there Bob I'd gladly lend you a hand to deal out some carnage to those living bulldozers.

What would you think Bob of a 12 gauge SXS coach shotgun open choked with Sg's with a flashlight on the end.

I have many rifles and set ups good for hogs . I try to use as many different ones as I can , or what set up would be best for the time . I was night hunting with a 30 cal AR with a thermal . Not the best set up for real quick close up shots [ ask Ovidio ] , that is why I had the 10mm Glock also . A shotgun is not going to make a 80 + yard shot in tall grass in the dark . It would be fine for a close up charging hog , but would made a poor 2nd back up weapon when using a rifle . After 270 hogs , this was only my 2nd charge . So it is not very common .

I was talking about acquiring the target and getting the shot off quickly on a moving target at night with a thermal .

Yes, you did kill that hog with one shot . I guess it was one as I fell a sleep waiting for the shot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Changing subjects . I was beach shark fishing on the Texas coast about 2 weeks ago . Did ok , 2 smaller blacktips , a sandbar . But one the last evening with about 5 minutes of fishing time left as I was packing up my rods I got a big hit . 1/2 hour later I landed a 5 foot 100 lb blacktip shark . It drew a crowd at the beach and the usual dumb questions like " I did not know there were sharks out there "

Up here in Michigan we don't have near the numbers of boar you do in Texas but they are spreading. About 5 years ago while spotting the woods behind me across the river I seen what looked like a bulldozer on a full run from left to right. Took a while to decide it had to be a hog, here in a county our Dept Nat Resources said at the time they weren't in. Year later a Deer hunter shot one a couple miles away. At the time I seen it every county around me was marked as reported sightings and or kills.

On the West side of the State near Muskegon in 2007 friends of my cousins had been chased in to their house by a big one. 2 years later 2009 while having dinner it came back in their yard. They got it and 3 smaller ones. The big one weighed 514 Lbs and measured 6' 3" from snout to rump. They had to drag it with their 4 x4 . He worked for the local paper, it became known as 'Hogzilla'.

Also that year a call came in to the police and game wardens of a hog attacking a truck parked on the side of the road. This was north but not far from the kill above. They killed it weighing 630 Lbs.

I'm sure no big deal to you, just thought I'd share. Up here you hear guys just sorta hee haw about hogs. I've passed on stories told to me from friends from Alabama about people getting killed in their backyards. Most (not all) but most up here are in for some hurt if these hogs aren't thinned.

Ovidio , you are always welcome to invite yourself hunting here the next time you are in the USA . It is the start of Texas deer season as of Nov 4th , so I was really just deer hunting . I just shot the hogs that got in the way . I could really up the hog score if I was just after hogs . If the wife gets her deer this weekend I will go full hog hunt .

Some folks here in Fla like the idea of letting the dogs get the hog then they jump in with the knife and cut the hog's throat. Not my cup of tea. Willing to hunt, but only with a rifle.

I meant for a charging pig Bob as better for just a point & shoot at close range 9 x 38 calibre pellets per shell V's 1 single 10mm the pistol really gives you no margin for error or a jam!
I understand the limitations of a shotty used my SKB semi auto as stated sometimes in light scrub the load then was 3 x sg & 2 slugs

I just paid good money for some organic pork. I hope these animals are being butchered and packed, not just left to rot?

I bought a set up for hog that I'm itching to use but I refuse to pay $200 - $300 a day for the opportunity to hunt. If a farmer or rancher has a hog problem then you'd think he'd be more than happy to have some help culling the herd instead they all want you to pay to help them with THEIR problem.

Liability is a major problem for land owners . Anybody can sue for whatever reason now days . I know of a case where a guy was hog hunting , fell asleep and fell off of a low platform he was sitting on . It cost the land owner 21 K to get the suit settled . Plus letting people you do not know with weapons on your land can cause many different problems , shot cattle , buildings , ****ed off neighbors . Most land owners who lease out hunts have insurance for that , and have to pay for it . Or you can just spend about 500 K and get your own place .

We're looking into that. We're only living near the city because my wife and I still work and we want to keep the daily commute reasonable. When I retire next year we're going to pull up stakes and buy an acreage somewhere.

Just heard about this today on the news-

What they are calling a exploding population of hard to eradicate 'Super Pigs' from Canada are threating to spill across the northern border, and northern states like Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking steps to stop the invasion.

One thing in the attached article I question is this:

Any Thoughts on this? Remember the Buffalo? Wouldn't the number of hunters factor in ?
The season is pretty much 24-7-365. Ban hunting because it makes the problem worse? The pigs smarter and liking night time better ? :dunno:

I guess British Columbia has been ahead of the curve....for decades now. Wild pigs are a 'Schedule C' animal which means they are an invasive and destructive species that can be hunted "at any time, anywhere" by anyone with a valid hunting license. I first hunted hog in B.C. out by Harrison Hot Springs in the '80's.

As it should be. Destructive and dangerous.

Now that the hunting season is on, we're full of Snowhites who call hunters murderers and provoke them whenever they can.
The simple fact that not a single one of those idiots is ever shot should be proof that hunters are really good people...

If you do not mind , could you give us a little run down on hunting in Italy ? What regions , what game , what rules ? Also how do the anti-hunters mess with you ? Luckily in Texas we have laws to protect hunting . It is a crime to harrass legal hunters .

I don't know much about the Italian rules. They are actually very complicated and restrictive, nevertheless, there are still quite a few hunters around.

The way the nutheads disturb and harass hunters is by running around the woods and fields shouting and waving signs with insults and similar stuff, blowing whistles and beating on drums. They close in on the hunters, surround them, shout and insult them, until they leave.
Hunting should be protected also here, but when you have judges who can do what they want and are in a vast majority kids of a strongly left-leaning culture...
Rights are such only if they (the judges) agree with those rights, otherwise they will justify the hooligans by saying that they exercise their freedom of speech and similar stuff.
That is the reason why I admire those people (the hunters), because they always restrain themselves.
Considering how many nuts there are around, I would be a bit cautious before going and harassing someone with a loaded shotgun or rifle in their hands.
