stopped into a indoor flea market today , found a decent flaming bomb 5o cal ammo can to restore $10 , just has a light coat of spray paint , can see the original paint through it
anyway , he had a "WOODEN" practice/dummy bomb that stood about 3 feet , very heavy and actually pretty and n good shape , almost like it had a steel or lead core , that heavy , anyone familiar with these , how collectable , rare , common , what they go for , any info at all?

Need photos. Way too many different types. They are not common in any case. 3ft high and heavy, it probably would have come home with me if less than $100 easy. More than that I'd have to think on it but a couple hundred isn't out of the question for these.
he had $135 on it , but hes a haggler , he had $20 on the flaming bomb can and he cut that in half at the drop of a hat , i bet i could get it for $100 ,i cant post photos here , i tried everything , and cant seem to get it , its the only site ive never been able to figure out , extremely frustrating
i had never heard of wooden practice bombs , never knew it was a thing

in fact i would say almost identical to this except the painted stripes were different color and i think there was a tip on it
this actually gave me a lightbulb moment , i did not understand why a dummy round would be wood , i see now ITS FOR PRACTICE DRILLS , lol , ifeel stupid , now i also understand why it weighs what it weighsQuote:

Just to affirm what many have posted, these 3" practice shells were plentiful at Flea markets 15 - 20 years ago. I picked up three with the steel 'projectile' and wooden 'shell casing' which I think look better and might be a little rarer due to their being made out of what would have been a strategic material back then. I paid $100 for all three 10 years ago but haven't seen any for sale the last few years, most having been picked up by collectors I assume. I would think $100 to $150 would be a fair price for one today.
Those bring a bit more around here. Can be in the hundreds. Yes, 3" 50cal drill round.
well went back today , i remembered a couple things wrong , he had $145 on it and i thought the metal was painted , he seen me looking at it again and said hundred bucks , i said sold , thing has to weigh 30lbs

On a recent documentary that I watched it was stated that during WW2 the Germans constructed a "decoy"/fake airfield intended to fool the RAF. The RAF responded by "bombing" the "fake airfield" with a single wooden (fake) bomb.Quote:

im thinking its Maple , lammed together , its from 1943 so it would have darkened over the years , the grain looks a bit tight for birch , it would make more sense that they would use maple for durability over birch , the grain on the cone shows like that because its the end grain cut exposed
I apparently never took photos of mine. I could swear I did including the case but I can't find them. The case is buried so I can't get at them easily either. I know I have three different types.

A Navy buddy gave me the spent casing from one of our 3" 70's and the Limbo ASW mortar from our Restigouche class DE's. I intended to replicate the projectiles these two cases launched for a display to commemorate the class since they were all being de-commissioned but a busy family life took up all my time back then.Quote:
