Very nice, I have never seen another one like this. Looks to be in excellent condition, awesome shotgun. Would have been a nice shotgun to carry!
here are a couple of different butt and forearms, both equally correct.

First run of serial numbers, before they started replacing broken and worn wood. Note the matte black finish on the receiver while the rest of the gun is parked. Later guns, and reworked guns, displayed the grey parked receiver.

Anyone ever see one of these for the M5 style bayonet? I am currently trying to sell one of the shrouds for those but can find NO info on them anywhere.
US Military Trench Gun Shroud/Heat Shield - eBay (item 180383889941 end time Jul-26-09 09:44:22 PDT)
If nothing else, it could be used to make up a nice representative piece. I put it on my Sears 200 shotgun (made by Winchester, a copy of the 1200) but the barrel was too long so it did not look right. Otherwise I might have just found me a M5 bayonet and kept it.
I am still looking for a pic or any info on the legitimate Vietnam era or later use of the shroud for the M5 bayonet if anyone has any......
These bayonet lugs/heatshields were destined for use by ARVN (Marvin the ARVN) on Stevens 77E shotguns. Most never made it to the RVN before the collapse and takeover by Uncle Ho's forces. The remainder were sold on the commercial police supply market. A friend of mine got 10 out of an Ohio PD a while back; they were bought for use on Rem 870s after the Watts riots. FWIW.
Bloodhound
SGT ROCK that is a great example of a Winchester M1200 trench gun. I am currently working on a retro shotgun project which involves a model 1200 from 1965. I was able to source the stock and forearm for this project but unfortunately can't find the sling swivel/attachment for the stock. The heat shield with bayonet attachment can be bought as a reproduction and comes "in the white."
The sling swivel for buttstock is one from a 1903 Springfield. Pretty common piece.
Have an ex-police issue Winchester Model 1200 with an attached ventilated guard suited to the M-5 Garand bayonet. Purchased it at Houston Texas gun show back in 1987 when the police were still allowed to peddle their used shotguns back to the civvie market. As I remember, the shotgun I purchased originated from a small police department in south Texas. Also picked up a Stevens Model 620 with ventilated guard for $120.00 and Stevens Model 520-30 riot gun in newish condition for 150 dollars more from the same dealer. Nice WWII issue Model 97 Winchester trench guns were also available for 350 dollars each but were too expensive for my budget. Ah, those were the days!!!!
For CDA 97,
The original heatshields I believe are different for the original Win 1200 verses the ones being reproduced in white. The ones I have seen in white are based on the pattern for the Win97, Win12, and Stevens. The Win 1200 heatshield bayonet/barrel lug has a raised portion, like a 1/8 inch wide shoulder band, inside the barrel opening for the end of the Win1200 barrel to run up to when installed. The Win 1200 barrel doesn't pertrude from the bayonet/barrel lug and the lug portion is kinda rounded in the back. I included a picture of a old one I purchased from mgf 1970 taken out of it's packing. Let me know if I'm off base.

I guess I never posted pictures of my Winchester M1200 trench gun clone next to my M16A1 clone. The stock and handguard are USGI, the receiver is painted with Aluma-Hyde II flat black, the barrel and barrel shroud/bayonet lug and other parts are parkerized.

That's one sweet trenchgun!
I am building one of these using a pawnshop M1200. I've shortened the barrel shroud to 20 inches, but I have run into a problem.
For those who have done it, how did you get the barrel shroud to fit? My shroud does not have enough clearance between the set screws and the barrel. I could make some relief cuts in the bottom of the barrel for the screws to clear, but if there is a better way I'm open to suggestions. I am pretty sure I can make the cuts without damaging the barrel's integrity.
Does the real thing have relief cuts, or is the barrel tapered to clear?
Yes, the factory guns have the three grooves cut into the bottom of the barrel.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
I'll post some pics when it's done. I've got the barrel cut (got lucky and found a cylinder bore 26") down to 20" and I'm working on fittng the shroud. Going to finish the reciever in black and parkerize everything else. Also need to refinish the wood, any advice for correct stain there?
It depends on the wood but if it's walnut you could use tung oil, watco danish oil or BLO just like before. The first and the last are the military standards.
...Is it walnut?
Not sure, whatever the factory is.
