I can see where those three guys with shovels could greatly improve that road. Not.
And looking down the road we see another group with shovels..
Later 42rocker
Talk about shoveling against the tide
Some sadistic officer...
Old Engineer adage: "Dirt plus Mud equals more Mud."
Anybody have any facts about what they were doing there and why?
Daan-- They are probably trying get some of the water off the road using basic hand tools. I don't believe they are under enemy or observation as the area is pretty open and flat. The best way to do the job is to construct drainage ditches on either side of the road with retention ponds to keep the water away from the road. They also can fill in the low spots with medium size gravel or stone and lay corduroy road or Marston matts. With modern Engineering equipment it would be an easy job. With WWII equipment it would take a bit longer.
It could be just busy work - in my experience often used as a tool to stay out of trouble.
Shoveling mud might just be keeping those guys from picking a fight with the company next door, gambling, scavenging, etc. Or, perhaps it's voluntary. If I had a choice of looking busy shoveling mud, or stirring diesel into vats of human waste and burning it...I'd be quite eager to shovel mud - or any other task for that matter. Been there.
