My New Truck

My old truck was fully depreciated and when you run a small business, that's pretty important. I generally keep the old one and trade in the second oldest one but that one is not road legal right now so it's staying put.

My old one is pretty basic, F-150 standard cab 2WD, 6.5 foot bed.

My new one is a huge upgrade, F-150 king cab 4WD, 6.5 foot bed. A lot of bells and whistles I haven't figured out yet. The one I'm most curious about I can't use. A trailer back up knob that replaces the steering wheel somehow when backing up with a trailer. Tried to use it last week but got all sorts of alarms. Apparently, I have to program the trailer into the trucks computer for it to work. I never had trouble backing up a trailer but this has me intrigued.

Out with the old, in with the new. My last three have been fire engine red so this is a big color change. Same color as our car. Color has never been very important to me, I go with whatever is available.

I liked working on my older cars in the day you could open the bonnet have a xmas party in the engine bay and fix issues.
Nowadays I just check the main things, oil/water/battery/washer fluid, I leave the rest to the computer savy mechanics such is the complicated nature of our vehicles so much stuff in their engine bays one can hardly find where it starts and the electronics finish.

I bought my wife a "Hazard Yellow" VE Commodore so she could be seen as to me dark cars are very hard to pick up on rainy days with spray & no h/lights etc, my Colorado 4x4 is white.

Yes, it's an exciting time getting a new truck, especially these days when a new truck costs twice what we paid for our first houses! My semi-retirement extended contract ends at the end of the year so I bought a new at least to me. truck last May. I grabbed a lightly used 2022 Ram Power Wagon loaded to the nuts with all the expensive options you'd want for serious off-roading. We're picking up our new off-grid travel trailer early in the New Year and taking off to the boonies. No KOA RV parks for us, we want to sit around a campfire listening to the lonesome Loon and watching meteors streak across the Milky Way.

3.5 dual turbo I think they said. I'm not an engine guy. All I know is I spun the tires while already doing 20mph and didn't even floor it.

Nice! I'd just be spinning my wheels hoping to get above 20mph driving to work during rush hour.

I did test drive a Dodge Ram that felt like a tank. I did like it but it had a sunroof which are nothing but problems and double the mileage for just a little less. This doesn't quite have the tank feel which I like.

It is a rocket ship. Check to see if you have sport mode on the shifter. That turns it into a hypersonic rocket ship. Mine is nearing 200k no oil usage with oil change every 5000k.
I would recommend researching transmission service recommendations. Old school was never touch it. I went that route and developed a shudder at lockup at about 175k miles.

I'm still figuring it out to be honest, so many things I didn't have before. It has a 10-speed transmission, and I can operate it manually if I want. I don't know if that's the sport mode you speak of. I am a Ford guy. Almost all my vehicles have been Fords. Not opposed to Dodge, will never own a Chevy. I have owned 5 Ford trucks, 2 Rangers and 3 F-150's. I still have the second Ranger, it runs but won't pass inspection so I use it as a Halloween decoration. Cars have been a Fiesta, 2 Escorts (one wagon), an Escape and and 2 Focus.

Non Ford, 2 VW Beetles (really a fan of them also but don't currently have one. A Dodge Dart and a Hyundai which I will never buy again. Son in law is trying to convince me to trade the old truck for a VW and use it for Halloween. I'm liking the idea but it will have to be roadworthy.

Allot of you can relate to one of these a "Landie" with the half windows out was my farm vehicle when I was a farmhand on a 33,000 acre property, I was using a John Deere 215Hp 4x4 tractor pulling 2 x Pederick root/rock rakes.
The aircond was not working and in 43C heat I was in no need of a Jenny Craig weight loss program......!

I still miss my '96 F250, 7.3 powerstroke (Int'l 444). Bought it with 58,000 km on it, retired it when it had 720 000km on it (my wife told me it wouldn't fit a baby seat). The transmission casing cracked from heat fatigue at around 600,000 km. Diligent on maintenance and high quality fluids (chevron primarily). For the engine, only ever did glow plugs. Weird solenoid issue at the beginning (swapped Ford parts for Int'l) and had to deal with poor fuel bowl aluminum castings twice.
My 2011 f250 diesel was a pain for cheap turbo bearings and exhaust system sensors (the crap VW cheated on).
Still got about 60% of what I paid for it after 10 years when I got my 2024 f150 last year. Only brand new truck I've had.
