"REAL" Value of an original N96 No4MkI "Bracket"

I have a real N96 bracket assembly for a Brit No4MkI T.What would the fair market value be for the piece vs one of Roger Payne's repros?I will post it for sale HERE on the CSP "Shopper" once I have a handle on it's current value.It is all there and all original and in very nice condition.

If it were Canadian as opposed to British I wouldn't dream of parting with it.

I might ALSO decide to sell an original Long Branch "L"ong buttstock with an original LB cheek rest mounted and both pieces are also brand new.

Just got one of the same from England for just about 400 dollars US.

Hmmm.Having probably as many M1 Garands (something like 30) as I do Long Branch No4's and CDN Marked early Lee-Enfields like LE I's and LEC I's as well as one only 1915 dated NoIMkIII(Intact as built) and as of last weekend one FEWER Long Branch T I am inclined to agree.

I would think it depends on if you want something to shoot or something to collect.
Dr. Paynes brackets are dead on, which is one heck of a lot more than I can say about the copies made in India

You're right there John. I have a feeling that I mentioned this some time ago on the other side but about 50 or so of Roger Paynes brackets were utilised on the latter rebuilds of the L42's destined for War Reserve stocks and they were indeed perfect. It's ironic that some of the L42 owners out there who would probably shudder at a repro anything, probably have an MoD fitted repro bracket. Does that make it a repro? The owners of those riflescan at least be assured that they have one of the dedicated War Reserve Stocks held at xxxxxxxx in Berkshire

The steel stock and quality assessment was done at the material labs at Shrivenham and even that was the same horrible black-heart (or was it white-heart...?) malleable cast! It's such an old formula that I can't find the mix in Machinerys handbook any more!

Repo scope mounts are always easy to spot. Nice smooth fit and finish. No tool marks or casting pock marks. As opposed to the originals that always look like crap iby comparison.

I picked mine up from a forum member (thanks Alan!).

I restored a No4T Trials rifle, with an original No32MkI scope (Thanks Warren!) and the Sarco repop bracket just did not look right. I felt that for the resoration going with an original bracket (although not original to the rifle, unfortunately) was the best way to go. Now to pick up an original cheek piece. Place here in the states has them advertised, will get one to see what it looks like.

John, until about 2 years ago, never really shot a Garand much. Got my first two from CMP, a 6 digit Springfield two years ago, and last year hand picked a nice H&R from the south store. Really like how they feel and shoot. I've got to say, in shooting different rifles, the top five for me are M1917/P14, No4MkI, M1 Garand, M1 carbine, and then the AK series.

Whilst we're on the subject of reproduction No32 brackets, I will be phossing & blacking the first half dozen off the production line from the latest batch next week. For John R's information they will retail for 200 pounds, which is rather more than the Indian made version, but then people will be getting rather more bracket for their outlay. Over the last two or three years there have been a few very patient people waiting for me to get these done; I have kept a note of their email addresses & will be offering them a bracket at a beneficial price to thank them for their patience & loyalty. Watch this space!

Are these the same material/drawing spec as the ones supplied previously to the MoD Roger? I ask about the steel stock as the material we tested was awful, but it was original. The ironic thing is that the repros LOOK better that the originals.............., but originals, they ain't!

Re-reading my comments above, could make it sound as if I am being less than complimentary about Rogers brackets. I hope it doesn't sound like that. We batch tested the material and it was identical (within the bouds of mixability!) as the original material, as specified. And I meant that the current Indian Sarco brackets look too good............

Peter, these are cast steel -- though I am assured that functionally they should be fine & are not at all brittle. I just couldn't find anywhere that does white heart or black heart malleable cast iron. Previously I had a little company in Walsall do them for me, but they've since gone the way of flesh, so NG helped out by asking a supplier for his company to quote for us.

The machining has been done by the company I always used for the first few batches of brackets in the 1990's, before the late Mr Smith did the last couple of production runs for me.
