Who make one that will lock the slide open?

Colt MADED one!
I have a Colt conversion that I've shot thousands of rounds through. The original mag that came with it had a follower that was made of some kind of white metal. It didn't take long for the follower to ware out and fail to hold the slide open. I bought an aftermarket mag with a steel follower and have had no further hold open problems since. The one problem that has been continuous since the beginning, is the floating chamber. With ammo that tends to shoot a little sooty, or prolonged shooting, it doesn't take long for the floating chamber to soot up and fail to float. At that point, failure to feed is the norm. A good cleaning fixes the problem though.
The original followers were machined steel, and Colt really made a mistake when they went to the alloy follower.
I have always oiled the floating chamber with Break Free or Triflon, and never had any problems with the chamber hanging up. I always clean it thoroughly after each shooting session.
Is anyone currently making a kit that lock's open?

Anyone have info on Fixed sighted Colt Conv Kits? I have one. never seen another
Snafu,
I also have a fixed sight Colt conversion unit. I have no information about it except I purchases it used sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's.
It came with two Colt magazine with WORN "pot" metal followers. I had to install an shape steel pins so the followers would activate the slide stop.
Best luck I have had with the floating chambers was to go to the Federal American Eagle 38 gr HVHP ammo. For some reason that stuff shoots MUCH cleaner than anything else. Have been using my unit since 1974 with various ammo, much of it CCI Green Tag.. Whereas some ammo will lock up the chamber in less than a box, I can put 250+ rounds of the Federal through it and the chamber still drops of its own weight with the slide open. Lubrication doesn't seem to be an issue. Not quite sure why but it works for me.
Anybody got an instruction manual in PDF form for the Colt conversion kit that they can share?
Bob K.
It is indeed your lucky day. I just scanned my Colt Conversion Kit instruction sheet last week. If you email me, I wiil attach it to a reply.
I couldn't access your email address, so I sent you a PM.
Hi, Johnny,
The earliest ACE followers I have seen were the folded sheet steel ones. I have heard of solid machined steel but have never seen one. Could you post a picture? (Yes, they were better than the zinc cast type.)
Thanks.
Jim
The magazine on the left is the original ACE magazine, the middle magazine is the early Service Model Ace magazine with the milled steel follower, and the magazine on the right is the later Service Model Ace with the pot metal follower.
The ACE magazines were used in the early Service Model Ace pistols, and when the construction was changed with the different follower, the base markings were changed to the Service Model Ace.
The second photograph shows the difference in the steel and pot metal follower where it actuates the slide stop. The pot metal follower is slightly bent on this one.

Anyone know where I can get a slide stop for the conversion kit? I checked e-gunparts, but they are out of stock.
Bob K,
If you haven't already done it, you may want to check out some of the other M1911/M1911A1/Government Model forums. forum.m1911.org and 1911Forum - Powered by vBulletin come to mind.
I also have one..it is polished blue on side of slide and the top round is matte. It has the roll mark... conversion unit COLT automatic cal.22 l.r. prancing colt. It also has an EP'd TA19 just above roll mark. It came in a brown wooden box that also has the TA19 marked on it. I am wondering if this is not something that might have been military at one time....it has the fixed sights.
I forgot to mention that the mag is marked P with the prancing colt. COLT .22 L.R. The frame is Essex #220XX and there were some issues with these frames..although many are just fine. Wonder when the frame was made? The slide on this conversion has vertical serrations..about 19 grooves.
I just posted some pics of this Colt Conversion Unit in the box on GunBoards. Still looking for info. Colt conversion unit. - Gunboard's Forums
