Any one looking at buying a new computer might want to take a close look at some of the other operating systems,I fired this pc up Sat. a.m.,had 34 fixes and a Service Pack waiting to be downloaded and installed,took a couple of days,got on line this a.m. and had 4 more patches waitng to be downloaded and installed,I think Microsoft should offer an exchange of operating systems and get rid of this Vista.

I don't know much about computers, but when the guys sold me mine, they told me, don't mess with Vista. So I stayed with XP.

After a couple years getting those darn "updates" I finally had enough. Got to where my fast PC was taking a minute to come up for loading those updates. Finally did away with the update crapola setup.
But to avoid virii and malware and bugs, I loaded a thing called Threatfire from PC Tools. It runs in the background, updates itself nearly every day, only takes a few seconds. It's free and I no longer have to put up with those stupid updates from MS.
Works for me.

Most of the Vista bashers have not used it for any length of time and are often parroting what they have heard from other non-users. One caveat is that any PC running an "Operating system of the Masses" as opposed to an "Operating system of the Minority" (Apple OS X+, Linux) is perpetually under attack and will need patching. On consequences is it will need a high speed I-net connection time to time. If a machine has been offline a while (Most PC from major manufacturers and retailer qualify as they will be sitting in a warehouse for some time before you receive it.) It will need updating before you can really use it.Quote:

I use Vista Home Premium on my primary home system. Compared to XP it's much more stable. On a multi-monitor desktop installation the gadget bar which was added to Vista and XP lacks is extremely useful.

most I know who have (or had) both XP and Vista swear by XP and swear at Vista. Rolling a pc/laptop back to XP from Vista is BIG business in the computer shops. Just this w/e on a local computer call-in show, I heard Vista referred to as the "2nd ME" - a stopgap on the road to Windows 7. Which, by the way, is scheduled for release very soon (they just announced the RC1 version). I've [I]heard[I] that it (Win7) is gonna be the next XP - THAT is good news. So - if you're looking to buy a new pc/laptop - wait for Windows 7 (or, when you buy your new pc/laptop with Vista, ask if the manufacturer/retailer will upgrade to Windows 7 - and how much). I'm on a new pc - coulda had Vista, but that wasn't gonna happen. They offered me XP Pro or XP Pro x64. Chose the latter and never looked back (gotta remember XP Pro x64 is based on Windows Server 2003, not WinXP Pro - very reliable platform, and fast!).

Okay, one must remember there were multiple flavors of Windows. And guess what? The whole code base is handed down from Windows server and workstation is not just one flavor or the other.Quote:

I have to agree Windows 7 is going to be quite good. I've been beta testing it on a low-end (reads old) laptop (it's a Dell XPS M140) and it's been mostly stable. The driver for the Intel 915 video chipset has been a little dodgy though.
Thirdly, like you alluded even Vista is on the verge of being replaced, but the truth of the matter is Windows 7 is really Repackaged Vista sp3. Great features though! Including a win XP virtual mode it also has better diagnostic tools.
Also, for what it's worth I'm one sixth of IT support for a major University and I'm also technician for a local clone shop. So I have a good feel for what has been selling. I'll admit the first of the year we were building a lot more XP boxes; however, as the year progressed more and more people were opting for Vista and now that the new Intel i7 chips have been released we have been seeing a shift towards Vista 64.
Also, salespeople tend to sell towards the clients capabilities. So if you walk up and admit that you do not know much about the subject matter they will "dumb down" and sell you the older technology. Why? Other than being rather "bubbly" the Luna interface of Windows XP was more evolution than revolution. So the salesperson is banking that you'd be more familiar with the basics of XP and not require much overhead in the form of technical support may it be from walking in asking questions or calling in via telephone.Quote:

I agree that there is nothing wrong with Vista. It's big and the corresponding hardware is needed to run it. There is more security included with it so that most diagnose Vista as something to "stay away from" or "I heard from others don't bother." Sir. My I.T guys tell me that Vista will be no longer by mid summer. Microsoft will merge Vista into another version of....?... XP? As of now, no one knows for sure. For myself. I have never had an issue with my version of Vista. I would take it over XP any day. It is a much more user friendly system. I guess I'm simply...lucky. G.
I have had Vista for the past 2 years. Absolutely, hands down, a better system. Now, this was Vista from the go. Not a patch job. But powerful, user friendly, and fast. No comparison. I have to use XP at work. And the comparison I see on a daily basis......Well, suffice it to say, one is late 20th century. The other is 21st century. Respectfully, G.
Windows 7 (Which is the follow on to Vista) will have an "XP emulation mode" for a lack of a better term, but it's mechanics and it's interface will still be along Vista lines.Quote:

I built a new box a bit over a year ago to replace the XPPro primary that I had built in Spring'03 ... I chose Vista Ultimate as the OS.
It is buggy, certain services will not start and some things I cannot accomplish on this new box (in order to fax I must depend upon one of my XPPro boxes).
Rather than turn it off I put it into sleep mode ... but every couple of weeks it no longer "see" my DSL ... until I reboot.
Overall, I am not enthusiastic about my bent & buggy ~$170 OS purchase.

Ubuntu 9.04 is quite nice. :thup: I liked 8.04 as well; however, it had issues with it's wireless encryption on the hardware (the same laptop I have win 7 beta installed on) I had it installed on. I might migrate my Dell XPS M140 to it after the Win 7 beta expires as XP is now on life support.Quote:

Ray you can fix this easy if you want to.
Start/control panel/Security Center/Turn automatic updates on or off/click- Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. This is what I have done to both our Vista and XP computers and it works well for us.
As an IT pro that has to deal with the general public on a daily basis whose knowledge of computers ranges from absolutely nothing :madsmile: to just enough to be dangerous :sos:, I have found the same thing that the others have found...Vista is a good OS AS LONG AS THE HARDWARE IS SUPPORTED. Do not try to install Vista on an old XP box cause it will not work reliably.
I have not made the switch to Vista and I do not see myself doing that anytime in the forseeable simply because I cannot afford the new hardware what with a 7 year old that thinks eating constantly is nothing strange, a 17 yr old in high school, a 20 yr old in college and an ex-wife that will throw mew in the hoosegow if the child support is not in her hand on the appointed day :nono:.
Checked the installed down load history,have a page and a half of them with 4 errors,2 in Office and 2 in Security,just deleted them,turned off auto downloading,going to look into it later to see if I can schedule a time for the auto downloading to occur,if not,I'll just manually check for them every couple of days,don't know if those with errors could have caused some kind of conflicts or not.

Well it's wonderful to hear that the OS I am now somewhat proficient with is now on life support. I stayed with Win 95 till I had no choice but go to 98 and stayed with that till I had no choice but to go to XP. The wife has Vista but I looked till I found one of the last out there with Xp after previous computer died after downloading service pak 3. After 6 weeks of reboots and hours on the telephone line with so called service techs which only 1 out of about every 15 spoke English that you could understand and having to buy new discs that didn't work I had to buy the new puter. The old one followed me to range one day anf got in the way of several 30.cal bullets. For some reason I felt better at the end of that day.

Oh how I wish I could. I use several graphics programs that have to be either Mac or Win, one cost several thousand dollars. Most graphic artist types like Macs, but people I have to email drawings back and forth to generally all run PC's so that's what I chose.Quote:
