Bolt Release lever or do you rotate the bolt head?

I have a No 1 MK IV. Wondering how you remove the bolt. I don't see a bolt release lever as I have on the No 4 MK II. Was there suppose to be one? Or do you lift and pull the bolt to the rear and then rotate the bolt head counter clockwise?

If I'm missing the release lever how big of a deal is it to replace and is it an Ebay item?

Did you mean to say No.4 Mark 1? If so, the fact that you are asking about a bolt release lever makes me think you have a No.4 mark 1*

If that is the case, the bolt is removed by drawing the bolt back until the bolt head lines up with a cut out in the bolt rail (right hand side of receiver). At that point you rotate the bolt head counter clockwise and the bolt can then be drawn rearwards and removed.

If its a No.1 mark 4, you have simply pull the bolt fully rearwards and then wit a bit of force rotate th bolthead counter clockwise and remove the bolt

It is a No 1 MK IV. The reason I asked was that I could never rotate the bolt head - it is very stiff and therefore did not want to force it. Also it seems that the wood in this area has the same relief cut as my No. 4 MK II for the bolt release lever and this got me too wondering.

I'll use a bit of Kroil first.

Williamb, Sometimes it can be very difficult to rotate the bolthead on a No.1. My Lithgow requires two thumbs pushing upwards, not much easier with the Ishapore...watch your finger nails!

Try the right knuckle on your index finger right hand, saves your finger nails! and funnily enough is the listed military bolt removal procedure from decades ago.

what am i missing here ? no1 mkIV ?

im assuming it to be a no1 mkIII* or a no2 mkIV , i realise neil knows his rifles and am guessing he just left this go ..........but , if not .............

and i see he used the nomenclature no1 mk4 in his reply - do i need to look for another rifle for my collection ? :>}

Sounds like you need to fill the gap in your collection by getting a No1 MkIV

OK , now i see it , the "no1" thru me off ,
i seldom think of the converted MLM & MLE rifles [mkIVs] as a no1 rifle , they were converted prior to the nomenclature change and werent most out of service by then ?

for that matter i seldom think of the mkI thru mkI** as no1 rifles , but i guess thats just a flaw in my thinking , because i do lump the mkI*** & mkIII in retroactively

i like the idea of learning something new every day , and perhaps this is it for today ,

and yes i do have that hole in my collection as well as a II & II* conversion as well

i dont think of the converted MLM & MLE rifles [mkIVs] as a no1 rifle , they were converted prior to the nomenclature change and according to page 172 of the LES were listed as "omitted from vocabulary" but retained in stores

but i guess thats just a flaw in my thinking , because i do lump the mkI*** in retroactively in my thinking , and its on that 'omited' list as well ,

I've seen a few SMLE's in which the bolt head was really difficult to rotate. Many times that was due to crud, sand, whatever, accumulated behind the springy "tab", thus preventing it from being pushed in by the bolt head trying to rotate. So I'D disassemble the rifle, remove the tab, clean all and reassemble... Often that did the trick.
