As near as I can tell, that is a matter of opinion. A large group of gun builders feel that most rifles will shoot better with some upward pressure on the barrel. Free floating does away this dampening force. In my opinion, my short answer would be to see how it shoots without the pressure(bedding) and then try it with the bedding. Then, with further study, you will find a school of thought on bedding the entire barrel chanel.
most rifles with a full length type stock will need a bit of pressure to shoot.
the 1917 has 2 stock bushings, that will need trimmed and replaced in the stock.
however.
iv yet to have a 1917 with original barrel that will shoot tighter then 1 inch at 100 yards.
iv yet to see groups posted here or other forums as well, nature of the beast.
love the 17, just wont shoot in a dime the way it was built.
Thanks ,i have made full bore rifles with P14s and M17s but the stock has always been half length with a floating barrell ,im trying to get that last little bit of accuracy out of it while keeping that military looks ,cheers.:banghead:
