Questions on Stevens 77E
As some may already know I am a gunsmith and do some recreation work for living history folks on all firearms periods.
This may ruffle a few feathers of some, as they may think I am muddying the water with fakes!
Again, this is not my intention, as I want to make some reproductions of rare pieces to put in the hands of living history and or collectors till the proper piece may be obtained.
I do not, and will not put any fake stamps on the pieces nor will I try to sell them as originals. I do wish to sell them to people I know or trust so they don't end up being sold to unknowing parties as originals. My work sells for way less than originals, and someone could make money on this fact, and that would $&*@ me off! As some poor soul would end up spending a lot of cash on a knock-off! You see this at auctions and Gunbroker etc. all the time.
That being said, I do wish some help on my next project, the Stevens 77 riot gun.
I know the early models had a band on the barrel for the swivel. Is the band of the "clamp" type, or is it soldered on the barrel?
Any photos of this type and the later period sling attachment on the barrel stud would be appreciated.The shotgun is mostly finished, except for the front swivel and parkerizing the piece.
Any photos etc. would be nice.

I believe the early type front swivel band is permanently attached (not clamped) to the barrel. And there seems to be a couple of different kinds of early bands. In Bruce Canfield's shotgun book, he shows an early type front swivel band that does not completely go around the barrel. It is open on the top part of the barrel. But, I have seen other 77E riots as well as diagrams of them in the Military maintenance manual that show the early type front swivel band completely encircling the barrel. A posted a link below that willl hopefully show the one diagramed in the maintenace manual.

The later type front swivel was an integral part of the magazine plug platform that is a part of the barrel.
The changeover from the early type to late type front swivel seems to have taken place around serial number 23,000.

Questions on stevens 77e
Heres some pics of the later type, no barrell band. Picked this up for $600 about year ago, didn't think its rare. Most were given away to other countries. Don't think anybody liked them, atleast compared to same era Ithaca M37 riot/trench. Mine went thru South Carolina Highway Dept. These are old pics, so if you want better, just ask. Wolf

On page 189 of Mr Canfields book in the upper right hand cornor he shows picturesof the front swivel and barrel bands on the 77E shotgun. The top picture is the correct later type swivel.The lower picture that shows the band open on the top, is actually the barrel band on the 67E rather than the 77E. The barrel band on the 77E goes from the bottom of the barrel over the topand down on the other side the swivel is in between the ends and is held in place with a threaded screw, clamping both ends together. The swivel can be movedfoward or backward on the barrel by loosining the screw and the band.
Was down to the armory looking at some SN's observed a 77E SN 23561 with the barrel band swivel. Another one SN 23844 had the swivel on the magazine plug platform. The change over was indeed in the 23000 range.

I was out in the shop this weekend and forged out a band, made the screw and got everything finished.
Will be parkerizing the 77, along with a 620 ( Vietnam reissue repro )
Now I know that the band is not soldered so I can parkerize this week. I have the Grandkids up, and it is hectic trying to get things done in the shop, as they want to "help". Always a problem when you work close to your house, and don't have to drive to work.
Wolf, if you could show some close up photos of just the front swivel, and block I would appreciate it, as I may make the next one with the later type of sling attachment. I think I would mill out the block and silver braze the block to the barrel, as this would actually be easier than the band, and a lot stronger sling deal. I guess I know why they went with the change.

Pics of two Stevens 77E
Greetings All,
Many years ago, the local police department in St. George, SC traded in their Stevens 77E shotguns for new equipment. The gunshop that ended up with them had 5 and I bought three. I found some pictures of them and offer them for reference. SCHD stood for South Carolina Highway department (the precursor to the current Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SCDHPT)).
One was unchanged (except for the SCHD markings) and still retained is short stock. The others had lengthened stock installed.
