1939 Serial Number 1903 Springfield Question

I found a 1903 Springfield with a 1939 receiver and '39 barrel. The barrel is star gauged but I don't find the receiver serial number listed as a NM or in lists showing star gauged barrels. The bolt has NS on it. The rear sights is Remington and it has a scant stock with a RIA stamp.

I would rate the metal finish as FINE. I wasn't able to gauge the barrel to get a ME.

So would this be a "put together" as I thought all 1903's with a star gauge was sent to be to be a sniper rifle. I am having trouble putting all of the pieces together. Thanks for the education.

Does the bolt have an electro-penciled S/N on it?

Star Gauge barrels were used for all sorts of "customers" including civilians.

Not all National Match M1903s were sold and thus, the serial numbers may not show up on SRS. There are certain characteristics they have (Promo has mentioned one). Something else to mention is that a number of unsold NM rifles were restored to active service.

If you can post information and pictures, that would help considerably. Some characteristics:

1) Star gauge barrel
2) s/n etched on the bolt (as Promo mentioned)
3) "Raceway" in chamber in the white
4) Type C stock with inspector stamp and the rifle's serial number stamped on the bottom of the stock near the lower butt swivel.

There are others, but those come to mind. Also keep in mind that some of these can be faked.

It did not have a electro-penciled S/N on it. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the star or the rest of the rifle. Thank you very much for the information. I passed on buying it because I could not feel comfortable about, too many questions.

You were probably wise. Can I ask what the price was?
