Genuine Remington M10 Trench (I hope)

Got this awhile back and it was relatively inexpensive compared to the price of these at auction lately. It wasnt cheap by any means but I figured with the rarity it was worth acquiring in case I ever want to do WWI reenacting And to own a shotgun that was possible used in the war. The reason it was discounted is that someone (possibly the govt) had cut the barrel. Another owner put a barrel extension on it to take it back to 23 inches. Whoever they were supposedly kept the original bayonet lug/mount with the gun but the eagle head is very difficult to make out. The top wood guard was missing and I have been trying to replace it. Got a repro on there now but the color of the stain is a work in progress.
Anywho, using Canfield's book, the serial number is in the " tends to fall in" range - 163,xxx. The US and flaming bomb look good on the correct side of the receiver. There is a hole near the muzzle where the set screw for the bayo lug goes. Canfield writes that there is supposed to be three transverse grooves for bayo adapter but mine does not have that - I thought that I read that is what the set screw was for - to keep the adapter from turning under stress? I think this is the real deal. Any comments or opinions would be greatly appreciated from those that own one of these or have seen them. This is the only one that I have ever seen in person. Thanks!

Wow, 231 views and only one reply? I guess most of you are like me and have never seen one in the flesh. With only 3500 produced, I wonder how many survived?

The only one I have seen was made up from parts and the wood handguard was fabricated from some other piece. So few have survived original or even the original guns with pieces missing that only copies exist here, no originals have been touted as existing at any of the Canadian shows... Most Remington 10 guns have been used up here with time.

That's a fantastic fix for the chopped barrel. I'm going file that idea away in the memory bank! Thanks for posting.

Thank you for the replies! There are a few of these for sale on Gunbroker. Some claimed genuine and one that is made up from parts.
