I recently scored a WW2 vet bring back in a sporterized stock. I can tell the stock is a laminated stock but since its been cut down I can not tell if it's a cupped or flat sine even the butt of the stock has been cut down. Which stock type would be the correct stock type because I've seen pictures of 1940 337 K98 with all types of stock
Also since I'm just getting into K98 restoration which books should I look at purchasing?

The SN is two digits with no suffix so its definitely a early 1940. I have most of the metal parts. I have a bayonet lug that mismatched and the front band is milled and unmarked. I've been looking at the book Backbone of the Wehrmacht by Richard D Law because I have a S/42G receiver I want to rebuild too. But this rifle has "k" codes instead of waffenampts. It has a duv barrel which will be replace by the S/42G barrel I found, but that's another project.
The Law book was considered the reference bible for many years, in the absence of anything else, but does contain outdated and incorrect info, so has been 'superceeded' in that regard by the Karem & Steves books.Quote:

i can't really call the stock it came with as original because on top of the stamped number in the barrel channel there are 3 more written in pencil. Well traveled traveled stock to have survive three other rifles,

I've read that in 1940 Mauser Werke AG, Oberndorf recalled and rebuilt a lot of the earlier made k98. But you know with the information you get off the internet it might not be true

Thank You. Now to un-Yugo that stock that was sold to me. It was suppose to be a K98 not a Yugo M44. It came with unmarked parts and a Yugo SN stamp.
