I received an M1 Garand from the CMP this last year. It is a "Service Grade" but besides being being coated in oil it appears immacualte. It is a Springfield and the Serial Number is 5857718. This puts the gun at mid to late 50's right?

I believe that serial number should be from 1955. The CMP is the only way to go for a Garand purchase, they are almost always better than described.
"Coated in oil".......
Is that a complaint? Jeez
Aloha, Mark
PS..............look up your ser# here.

Probably not oil but cosmoline for long term storage. Good news is that you learn so much about the guns when you have to take them completely apart to clean lube and reassemble. Bad news (not really) is that the cosmo may weep from your stock for a long time....
