Hi Gents,
I just picked up a No. 4 Mk. 1* that had been sporterized and I would like to restore it to its military glory. The stock had been cut off at the band. I've ordered a "cutoff tip" to repair the stock but I am not sure how to splice it. How is this done? I know Accraglas is in my future but how do I make a strong joint?
It's fiddley but make sure you have good square cut on your fore stock. Not a easy task with a tapered piece of wood. Once that is done rotate your drill press table to 90 degrees vertical, and drill a 1/4" hole a few inches deep making sure everything is plumb. Try to locate the hole so you are not drilling into the recesses in the fore stock. Once that is done take your replacement fore end ,make sure you will make a good square cut and at the correct length. Reassemble the rifle into your fore stock and take a centering insert punch and insert it into the hole you drilled into the fore stock.
Use a straightedge to make sure the two pieces are not canted and using the barrel as a guide tap the fore end to mark the corresponding hole. Go back to your drill press and once again make sure you have every thing plumb and drill the fore end.
If you are careful you can then epoxy a piece 0f 1/4" threaded rod to make the splice. Bit of a pain but that has been the best way I have found to make a splice.

Since I am having to splice this forend together, can someone give me the proper length of the forend from end to end? The receiver end to the tip at the front sight. When I place the two pieces end to end, I get 27 3/4" on the underside and 28" on the top side.
FWIW I measured the one I just put for sale at 28 1/8 inches long
