Component Shortages

Since most components, such as primers and powder are off the shelves and almost non-existant for now, do yourself a favor and take out the rimfires!
Most shooting clubs and ranges have Mini-Palma matches! Shooting a rimfire at 100 yards is equated to shooting a centerfire at 1000 yards.
You will not only hone your rimfire skills, but you will learn that having the proper shooting position will enhance your centerfire skills.
At our range, they have the mini-palma matches every month. This June we had over 150 shooters that participated, up from 110 the previous month.
One other point, you must shoot good target ammo if you expect decent results and your rifle must be in good shape to hit consistantly at 100 yards.

Many of the club members have switched to rim fire from center fire calibers due to price and short supply.

Rimfire at 100 yards is not like 1,000 yard centerfire shooting.

I once ran my ballistics software to estimate the wind-equivalent distance between a standard velocity rimfire and a typical 308 centerfire. I do not recall the final details but I seem to recall you had to get to 200 yards or maybe even 300 yards to get the same wind deflection that you would with a centerfire at 1,000 yards.

If you just think about it for a sec (no software here). The rimfire goes at 1000 fps, and the centerfire goes at 3000 fps. Yes, they both slow as they travel and the centerfire slows proportion ately more than the rimfire. Still, based upon just muzzle velocity, there should be about a 3-to-1 distance ratio, not a 10-to-1 distance ratio. The slowing down of the centerfire (lower average velocity) means the ratio is actually less than 3-to-1.

When all was said and done, I was even more impressed by the feats of those who shoot at extended distances, sometimes in horrible conditions, and how well they actually perform.

There are other issues that create differences, too. Recoil is one of these.

Do not get me wrong, 100 yard rimfire shooting is GREAT!

Okay, so when I got home tonight I re-ran the calculations.

Here's what I put in:
10 mph cross wind,
Sierra 168 gr MK with 2550 fps muzzle velocity
Eley Tenex with 1085 fps muzzle velocity

Here's what I got.

For wind drift equal to 100 yards = 45 yards (let's call that 50 yd)

For wind drift equal to 600 yards = 330 yards (let's call that 300 yards)

For wind drift equal to 1000 yards = 615 yards (let's call that 600 yards)

So, like I said above, the distance scales at less than 3:1 and in fact it's only about 2:1.

Furthermore, have you ever even shot a 22 in a 10 mph cross wind at a target 600 yards away? No, I didn't think so. Me, either. Think about that, remeber they put almost all of them in the ten ring and many are X's, then shake the hand of the next long distance shooter you meet.

I'm not going to argue with you, it's not worth the time to explain what Mini-Palma means. However, go on the web and find out or ask someone at your club, they can explain it to you.
Anyway, it sure is alot of fun, and that's what this sport is all about!

It's not an argument, it's just a "clarification"; a statement of fact.

I have personally hosted mini-Palma events at my Club's range, so I probably know at least the basics of the events.

Oh, I see, I re-read my post. It isn't well written, at all. I would edit it if I could. Why can't I edit my old posts on this forum? Do they get locked after a while?

All I meant was that accurately shooting a 22, or even a centerfire, at truly long distances involves a lot of skill. I have never fired a 22 rimfire at 600 yards.

Mini Palma is a type of prone smallbore shooting that is a miniature form of traditional High power Palma. Mini Palma is shot at 100 yards, 150 yards and 200 yards.
Our particular club only shoots at 100 yards for Mini-Palma. Perhaps the word "simulated" would be a better used word when describing the relationship between Mini and regular Palma. Whatever, it doesn't really matter, I still believe my statement and will stand by it.

This is the only part with which I do not agree. I 100% support your assertion. It is most likely that the next time I shoot a match it will be a 100 yard small bore prone event, perhaps as soon as tomorrow. So, I do agree with your basic concept.

Never mind, I was making a a technical correction which has gotten all blown out of proportion.

We used to shoot 22RF at 200 yards routinely. The target is the A-21 and it is still available from National Target. It's a challenge.
