Arisaka bolt issue type 38

I’ve just got hold of this rifle as a restoration project, and I’m having issues with closing the bolt fully down. Even with the receiver out of the stock and the firing pin and ejector removes it makes no difference. Tried a couple of bolts from a friends Arisakas and one was the same and one worked as it should. I’m wondering if this is an early receiver and a later bolt?? (it’s mismatched, rifle is probably made up of lots of bits). It looks like a one piece stock, looks like a chrome barrel but I can’t id the marking to the left of serial number. If so, can this bolt be made to work by a competent gunsmith?? as parts for these are pretty rare in New Zealand . Anyway, pics

Interesting, a one piece stock...never seen one before. I think these bolts need fitting and if it's a parts bolt then it will.

Any chance the bolt you have is a Type 99 bolt?

For all I know it could be, I don’t know enough about them but from what I read online the safety is at least type 38??

grant76 - --Remove the firing pin, spring and safety and see the bolt will close. Then remove the extractor and try to close the bolt. If the extractor has been replaced it might be a little long and interfering in the receiver. I have seen this a couple of times. A Type 99 bolt will close in a type 38 receiver only if the extractor is removed. But this would create a dangerous condition as the locking lug would not be touching the internal shoulders. From your pictures I believe it is a type 38 bolt. It looks to have some corrosion so oil it up good and try to carefully clean any interfering protruding rust off. Nothing too harsh as you don't want to remove any metal from the lugs. Regarding which bolt you have---I wrote the following in another similar thread--
I have a bolt and receiver for both a 99 and a 38 in front of me. The 99 bolt will fit into the 38 receiver and close. However the bolt lugs are short so if I push back on the bolt face, the first thing to stop movement is the bolt handle (which is the safety lug). NOT GOOD!!
The 38 bolt will not close in the 99 receiver because the lugs are too long.
This is what the bolt lugs measure (fore to aft) on my bolts:
Type 99 =.400
Type 38 =.503

thanks for that, tried bare bolt, no difference, gave it another clean and no difference. Measured the bolt lugs and mine measure .515 compared to your .503 so potentially thats my issue right there
