PH5E rear sight questions.

While I am working on my project Rawson sight, a friend came up with a PH5E just like the one in the OP here: https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=29759

Same clamp on base and all. He's going to send it to me as he has no use for it so I have some questions before starting this project.

As bubba has lost the detent balls, does anyone know what size they are? (With any luck, he'll have lost the springs too.)

Secondly, if the current mounting base is removed, is this 5E adaptable to the PH5E4 bracket? All the PH5E4 sights I have seen are relieved on the back side at the rear to match the E4 bracket contour. Will a 5E in this configuration fit a No4 action without that relief (on an an E4 mount)?

If it will fit, are E4 brackets available? I did some quick looking and I found one that sold on Gunboards in 2013 or so but that is the only one I could find.

The PH5E was a generic sight that had two mounting options with different brackets - both of which fitted into the recess at the back of the sight 'body'.

1) PH5E was for the Mauser action
2) PH5E4 was for the No4 action

I have taken PH5E's and removed the Mauser 'bracket' and added the No4 bracket. Quite simple if you can get the correct No4 bracket.

I had dimensioned 'engineering drawings' if you need to get a No4 bracket made up - let me know and I'll try and find them.

One thing to remember is that with the PH5E4 you CANNOT use the safety. A special safety was made solely for the Enforcer (the only No4 to use the PH5E sight)
You will either accept 'no safety' or can machine down an existing one to fit.

Thanks Alan. I might have a factory bracket located, but this gives me options.

My sight showed up in the mail yesterday. It is heavier than I expected. Bubba did indeed lose the W&E detent balls but the springs were still there. I've got it all stripped down to bits for cleaning and lubrication now. When the gallows arm is removed, one of the two steel balls that put pressure on the gallows arm falls out. It looks like the other hole was lightly staked at some point to prevent that. Surprised whomever staked the first hole didn't do the second as well.

Scott Stonehill made me a mounting bracket and screws for the No 4 action. Seems as though there is a bit of runout in the elevation screw as it binds slightly on the detent for one or two clicks. Need to pop it back apart and sort that out.
