The Eyewitness war museum in Beek in the Netherlands was broken into by six burglars in the beginning of August.

The burglary report came shortly after three hours. The perpetrators entered by forcing a battering ram through the entrance gate and then the front door of the museum villa.

According to a shocked founder and owner Wim Seelen, the perpetrators subsequently smashed a large part of the thirteen glass dioramas, where thousands of items from Allies and Germans from the war, including the necessary masterpieces, are displayed. Seelen was not allowed to enter his museum on Tuesday morning by order of the police because of the investigation. But in all likelihood, dozens of objects have been stolen.

An initial reconstruction, partly on the basis of witness statements and camera images, would show that the burglary was handled very professionally by the perpetrators. We talk about six perpetrators who fled in the direction of the A2 with two Audis and a BMW after the burglary. Before the ram raid, they placed tires on the street and parked a van right at a nearby intersection, presumably with the intention of blocking any pursuers.

"They knew exactly what could be found here and the value of the collection," says Seelen. According to him, the loot includes at least deactivated weapons, mannequins in uniforms, medals and decorations of the Allies and Nazis. Seelen is deeply moved by 'this cowardly act'. He considered it his life's work to propagate the story of the Second World War through a very unique collection. Seelen: “It is a very tough one for the museum, which has grown from a small private collection into a renowned museum with a special and authentic character. All materials each have a special story. Partly because of this, it is a particularly sad day for the museum. ”
