I am betting you have a 7mm instead of 30'06?
OlManDow
I checked the markings on my 7mm barrel and it's not there. That doesn't mean they're all the same. There are many different variants from what I've seen over the years but I've only had one 7x57 barrel. Possibly different subcontractors or manufacturers?
Good Day All,
I've owned a number of Johnson's over the years and all the ones with original barrels had the I[Gladius sword]O marking on them. I've seen it in various o'clock positions without a clear pattern as to where it was placed on the barrel (but mostly within 1-2" of the breach). On the current one I have, I can see it through one of the holes on the ventilator shroud.
My guess is that it is a barrel proofing mark that was applied at the Cranston factory but not necessarily by them. Could it be a Dutch proofing/acceptance mark?
Regardless of what it means, it is correct on an original 1941 Johnson barrel in 30.06.
Best Regards,
Michael
Checked mine- its on the underside of the barrel near the breech. Never paid it any attention before.
